Ammonia leak at Chobani sends two to hospital; factory evacuated
NEW BERLIN – A major ammonia leak reported shortly after 9 a.m. Monday at Chobani’s 669 County Road 25 production facility required the evacuation of the yogurt-maker’s entire workforce and sent two employees to the hospital as a precautionary measure.
According to a Chobani press release, the leak was detected in a chill tunnel at the New Berlin plant. The facility was immediately evacuated and all onsite employees were relocated to a safe spot.
Two employees were taken via ambulance to UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital and both have since been released in good health. No other injuries have been reported.
Once cleared and controlled, an onsite investigation determined that the leak was the result of a contractor’s error while working on an AC line in the chill tunnel, according to the press release.
Said Chobani communications coordinator Kelly Lacorte, “The safety of our employees and surrounding community is of utmost importance to us, and we thank all internal and external parties whose swift response led to the timely, controlled resolution of this situation.”
Emergency and fire personnel from the New Berlin, Edmeston and Sherburne departments responded to the scene, as did the county’s hazmat unit and CMT ambulance.
This is the second time in less than a year that employees have been forced to evacuate the facility due to an ammonia leak.
