ELMIRA – Thomas A. Edison, the number two seed in the Section IV Class C tournament, scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 2-2 tie and eliminate Oxford from postseason competition Tuesday afternoon.
Tyler Ungerland was hit by a pitch to start the Edison fifth, and Tyler Troccia dropped down a sacrifice bunt that led to a three-base throwing error. Ungerland moved around to score, and Troccia advanced to third base. Dylan Bellinger’s second single of the game drove in Troccia for added insurance.
“Overall, I felt we played really well,” said Oxford coach Chris Palmer, whose club finished 8-11 overall. “We had some hard-hit balls that they made plays on. The difference was in the error column. We committed four and they did not beat themselves. It was a fairly even ballgame against a team that has won our section four out of the last six years.”
Oxford benefited from Edison’s rare miscues in the field plating two runs in its opening at-bat. Adam Pierson walked to start the game, and promptly stole second. Cameron Heggie reached on an infield error, and moved to second on a stolen base to put two runners in scoring position. After back-to-back outs, Eric Dilfer’s single scored Pierson, and Heggie scored on Edison’s second error of the inning.
Kyle Michaud cracked an RBI double in the bottom of the first lifting Edison into a 2-2 tie.
