Anne Hills, modern folk at 6 On The Square Saturday
OXFORD – 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to welcome the award winning, contemporary folk music icon, Anne Hills on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.! Anne’s beautiful, strong soprano voice is enthralling, and her passionate lyrics will move you with their sincerity. This past winner of the “Best of Bound for Glory” award and numerous others incorporates country, blues, and jazz styles. Blend in her musical background, and it’s no wonder that this gifted singer-songwriter has been one of the major forces in American folk music for several decades.
Anne was born in Moradabad, India, the third daughter of educational missionaries. Raised in Michigan, she attended Interlochen Arts Academy where she formed her first folk trio. She was also the female vocalist with the Big Band that turned out future jazz greats Peter Erskine, Bob Mintzer and Chris Brubeck. She moved to Chicago’s fertile folk scene in 1976 and co-founded the folklore center Hogeye Music, still a force in the Chicago music scene.
Like an artist from the Renaissance era, Anne is a multi-talented singer, writer, actress, and superb musician. She has received numerous accolades from many festivals and music gatherings which has garnered her respect from her peers, with whom she has collaborated to create award winning musical and stage projects. Some of the folk luminaries she has had the pleasure of working with are Tom Paxton, Bob Gibson, Cindy Mangsen, and Priscilla Herdman. Anne has even written a children’s book (illustrated by Michigan artist Liz Paxson) based on her song “Dreamcatcher.” She also donates time for benefit concerts and community service projects especially to aid families and children in need.
The Chicago Tribune says of Anne, “…she has one of the most glorious voices in all of contemporary folk music.”
While many people are attracted to Anne’s pure soprano voice, it is her poignant and heartfelt writing about life that will pull you in and enfold you in its passion and honesty. This will be an unforgettable intimate performance with one of the legends of folk music.
