Chenango Republicans prepare for Lobster Fest

NORTH NORWICH – With numerous elections on the horizon, the Chenango County Republican Committee is preparing for the 37th Lobster Fest fundraiser.
The event will take place from noon to 4 p.m. July 22 at the Canasawacta Country Club.
Billed as the most “non-political” political event of the year, Lobster Fest brings dozens of politicians from every level of government in New York State and draws 500-1,200 attendees.
“It’s a presidential election year, so we’re anticipating quite the turnout,” said Committee Chairman Tom Morrone.
The event, which was started in the mid-70’s by Clarence “Rapp” Rappleyea as a social gathering, has grown to be the sole fundraiser for the Republican Committee. People from across Chenango County and beyond are drawn to the event each year by the lure of hundreds of lobsters, supplied by Price Chopper, and the chance to mingle with local and state politicians.
This year’s guest list will include Congressman Richard Hanna, running for re-election in New York’s recently redrawn 22nd Congressional District; Assemblyman Peter Lopez, running for re-election in the newly formed 102nd Assembly District; Assemblyman Clifford Crouch; Assemblyman Gary Finch; and State Senators Thomas Libous and James L. Seward.
State Supreme Court Justice Kevin Dowd, who is up for re-election in the 8th Judicial District, as well as Joseph McBride and Frank Revoir, Jr., who are competing for the position of Chenango County Judge in the September primaries, will also attend, as will Chairman of the Board of Supervisors Lawrence Wilcox and Mayors Joseph Maiuriano, Marsha Miller and William Acee of Norwich, Greene and Sherburne, respectively.
Morrone reported that the Chenango County Republicans have endorsed each of the candidates running for re-election listed above.
However, Morrone, the longest running party chairman in the state, explained that the fundraiser doesn’t just draw Republicans:
“The nice thing is we’ve always felt confident that this is the kind of fundraiser where it doesn’t matter what party you’re affiliated with or what side of the aisle,” he explained. “It’s an opportunity to come and meet your supervisors, neighborhood politicians and state representatives.”
Morrone said many of the people who attend don’t see each other apart from the annual fundraiser which makes it especially exciting.
Everyone has a chance to enjoy themselves and catch-up with old friends while still addressing hot-button issues.
“This year as far as voters go, I believe we’re going to see a tremendous turn-out,” said Morrone. “And if the Lobster gods are good to us and we have nice weather, I believe there will be a good turn-out on July 22 as well.”
Tickets for the event are $60 per person and can be purchased through Christman Motors, Chiarino Insurance and Myrna Wessels in Norwich, as well as from Mayor Miller in Greene and Mayor Acee in Sherburne.
