Wild Wheels Weekend benefits Norwich girl

MT. UPTON – The Wild Wheels Weekend Benefit Truck and Tractor Pull will take place June 8-10 at the Mt. Upton Community Park on Rt. 8.
All proceeds from the event will benefit five-month old Emily Maricle of Norwich, who was born 15 weeks early with a heart defect.
Emily has already undergone one surgery, but faces more later in life.
General admission for the event will be $2 on Friday and $5 for adults on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free for children five and younger.
“It’s a great family weekend in a non-alcoholic environment,” said co-organizer Paul Musk. “Bring your kids and expect a great time.”
The weekend begins at 5 p.m. on Friday with a “Fun Pull” open to the community and any stock truck or tractor. There will be no set classes and each “hook” will cost $10 with no limit.
Saturday will be the biggest part of the event, said Musk. Modified and super stock tractors will take to the track along with a variety of enhanced trucks for the main event at 6 p.m.
“In the past we’ve had superstock - which has a lot of power - semi trucks, full blown monster trucks,” said Musk. “That’s definitely the day you don’t want to miss.”
The weekend will wind down on Sunday with an antique tractor pull in the morning.
Although all proceeds go to help Maricle and her family, there will be more than one cause over the course of the weekend.
From 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. on Saturday the American Red Cross will set up a blood drive. Anyone donating will receive $1 off of admission.
Relay for Life will have a 50/50 raffle and all cans and bottles collected will go to their cause.
The Elks Club will set up an anti-drug and anti-alcohol trailer for kids and the Oxford Lions Club will provide hamburgers, hotdogs, chicken spiedies and pulled pork.
“These are a lot of very good causes,” said Musk. “Times are tough in the community, so we do what we can to help out local organizations.”
This will be the group’s 12th year of providing benefit tractor pulls. Musk said they do two pulls each year. The next pull will take place in September and will feature garden tractors to give children a chance to participate.
“For the committee, we thought there are two things everybody likes: Truck and tractor pulling and helping out kids; why not combine the two?” Musk said.
