Hundreds of area girls run in Cooperstown 5k

COOPERSTOWN – Hundreds of Central New York girls, ages 8-12, gathered at Cooperstown’s Clark Sports Center to complete the 10th Annual Girls on the Run 5K last weekend.
Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a national, non-profit organization that encourages pre-teen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. Each local team is led by women in their respective communities, who over a several- week program help to empower young girls with a sense of achievement and greater self-awareness.
In Norwich, the GOTR team gathered and practiced at the Norwich Family YMCA. This year, Gretchen Walsh again coached and ran with the girls in the 5K event. Over a dozen local girls participated in the YMCA-sponsored program and in the Cooperstown event. While the Cooperstown 5K is not a timed event, a local Norwich girl, Katie Gawronski, age 9, finished first among the several hundred girls participating.
For more information about the GOTR program, go the GOTR website at www.otsegocountygotr.org.
