LVCC’s Scrabble for Literacy set for Saturday

NORWICH – Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County will once again put vocabulary skills to the test as the agency gears up for another round of the annual Scrabble® for Literacy competition.
The 12th annual “Spellabration” will take place from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Community Room of Morrisville State College Norwich Campus, 20 Conkey Ave. Businesses and individuals interested in participating can register as a team or individually and join a team on the day of the event. Registration is $10 per person for early registration, $12 on the day of the event.
The event provides fun, snacks, raffles, and prizes for participants while also promoting literacy awareness and raising money for LVCC, which has helped adults enhance reading, writing and math skills for almost 30 years. Proceeds will be used to support program activities and purchase learning materials for students.
The agency is still seeking game participants, along with individuals and businesses willing to match donations made by a team of employees, become a Scrabble sponsor by making a donation to the Literacy Volunteers Program, or donate a gift certificate or items that could be used as door and raffle prizes.
The event has brought in nearly $30,000 to support efforts of the agency over the last 10 years, according to LVCC Director Laurie Jerome. This year, LVCC has its sights set on raising $3,000 – an attainable goal, given the support the event has received in the past, she said.
On average, 24 teams comprised of approximately 50 players take part in the word game fundraiser each year. The hope is for a bigger turnout this year, Jerome added.
“We're already seeing a nice response,” she said, citing the interest from Scrabble enthusiasts countywide. “It’s a good-natured competition ... We're really looking forward to making this a day of fun.”
Roughly 5,000 Chenango County adults lack the literacy skills to comprehend short newspaper articles or complete a job application, the agency claims. According to the Opportunities for Chenango website, an estimated 14 percent of adults in Chenango County read at or below a 4th grade level; another 25 percent lack a high school diploma. More than 42 percent of adults countywide have difficulty with basic reading, writing and math.
To register for the event or make a contribution, contact Literacy Volunteers at 334-7114 or email lva@ofcinc.org. Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County is a program of Opportunities for Chenango, Inc. and a community partner of Chenango United Way. It is dedicated to providing a variety of services that enable people to achieve their economic, family, or personal goals through increased literacy.
