22nd Air Show promises piloting opportunities, aerobatic show at the airport Saturday

NORWICH – The clouds are expected to clear out on Saturday just in time for the 22nd annual Chenango County Airport Day at the Lt. Warren E. Eaton Airport.
The free-admission event, complete with military aircraft exhibits, in-flight demonstrations and plane rides for all ages, drew 2,000 people last year. Organizers are hoping for another solid turn-out again this year.
“It’s supposed to be a real nice day, the good Lord willing,” said airplane enthusiast David C. Law, R-Norwich, who chairs the Chenango County Planning and Economic Development Committee.
“I just love airplanes, and want to keep our airport active and have people realize what’s there,” he said.
Community clubs and service organizations from every corner of the county get involved, with some sponsoring refreshments and activities. The North Norwich and Afton fire departments kick-off the action with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by food and beverage offerings throughout the day. An opening flag salute ceremony begins at 10 a.m.
One of Airport Day’s most popular attractions is the opportunity to experience piloting. Young Eagles from Chapter 1204 of the Experimental Aircraft Association provides flights free of charge for youths and only a parent or legal guardian signature on the registration form is required. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and continues through 2 p.m., with flights occurring as weather and other events permit.
Aircraft displays will include a jet engine manufactured at Norwich-based Unison Industries for GE Aviation. There will also be a sail plane glider from the National Soaring Museum in Elmira. Lt. Warren E. Eaton, after whom the airport is named, is the Soaring Society of America’s co-founder and first president.
The aerobatics show – a traditional spectacle of the day – will include in-flight stunts and tricks by Kevin Russo, Texan T-6 Aerobatics. The show begins at 1 p.m.
County officials hope to show off six new t-hangars at the airport, a new runway surface, lighting improvements and a new credit card-operated fuel pump for pilots. Corporate jets from companies such as Chobani, NBT Bank and Baillie Lumber regulary take off and land at the county’s airport.
The event is supported primarily through volunteerism and donations. Contact Dave Dibbell at 334-4102 or via email at dibbelld@frontiernet.net for more information about Young Eagles flights or to obtain a registration form in advance. Supervisor Law suggests bringing lawn chairs to better enjoy the spectacle.
