Libous named to Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council
ALBANY – New York is keeping the momentum going with a second round of funding for Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Regional Economic Development Council grant competition.
Cuomo defined 10 regional councils last year and tasked them with developing long-term strategic plans for economic growth and job creation. The councils are public-private partnerships made up of local experts and stakeholders from business, academia, local government and non-governmental organizations.
More than $785 million was awarded between the competing regions in 2011, including $49.4 million in the Southern Tier for projects ranging from flood recovery to rural farm revitalization to infrastructure improvements.
For this year, the Chenango County Industrial Development Agency is applying for assistance on the New York Susquehanna & Western Railway project and the Development Chenango Corporation is working with the village and town of New Berlin, for a Main Street grant and a sewer project, respectfully, said Commerce Chenango Economic Development Director Jennifer Tavares.
The City of Norwich and Opportunities For Chenango are also defining multiple projects.
“Development Chenango is encouraging private businesses to move forward with project applications,” Tavares said.
Earlier this month, Senator Libous joined the Southern Tier’s Regional Economic Development Council.
“Whether it’s our skilled workforce, our academic excellence at Binghamton University and Broome Community College, or our natural resources, it’s no secret that the Southern Tier has incredible potential for growth,” Libous said. “I’m excited to help work on a new proposal for this round of competitive grants.”
In Chenango County, the following received grants last year:
• Norwich Pharmaceuticals, Inc.: $2 million to increase both the company’s manufacturing and research and development capabilities and capacities through 2015;
• Chenango IDA, $772,422 for NYS&W Railway revitalization;
• Opportunities for Chenango Inc.: $500,000 to rehabilitate 20 homes with deferred payment loans, $350,000 to assist 14 low-and-moderate income households with the purchase of a home, and $250,000 to improve accessibility of 10 homes of persons with mental and physical disabilities and the elderly; and
• DCMO BOCES: $50,000 to train 20 unemployed Norwich workers for medical worker positions.
