Three Oxford students receive $10,000 scholarships
OXFORD – As exciting as it is for students preparing to take their next step after high school graduation, tensions can run high with the daunting cost of college.
It’s for this reason that Oxford Academy Central School alum Christopher Hansen and his wife, Jennifer are once again providing scholarships to students as they prepare to attend college.
This will be the second year the Hansens have offered the $10,000 scholarships. The scholarships were announced at the High School Awards Night on Wednesday.
This year’s recipients are Julianne Heggie, Kayla Karn and Ryan Moore.
“We look for students that stand out and are exemplary in a variety of fields, as well as show leadership qualities,” said Hansen.
The Hansens had set out with the intention of choosing two out of the five competing students, yet found the decision difficult and added another award at the last minute.
“These students are passionate about their school, sports and take part in many volunteering opportunities,” he explained.
The five finalists were interviewed by the couple, now living in Massachusetts, and answered questions about their goals, ambitions and what shaped them into individuals.
Christopher Hansen graduated from OACS in 1990 and since then has built a company that caters to high-end bathroom supply companies. He continues to participate in the school district with the scholarship program as well as donations to the wrestling team of which he was a part.
“We’re honored to have people like C.J. and Jen still part of the community,” said Jerry Locke, 8th grade biology teacher. “There are a tremendous team and this is a great program for the kids.”
The Oxford Graduation Ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. on June 23 in the Academy’s Performing Arts Auditorium.
