Hanna defeats Earlville challenger

NORWICH – U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna defeated his Republican primary challenger, Michael Kicinski, on Tuesday.
District-wide, Hanna received 9,806 votes to Kicinski's 4,069.
The Chenango County Board of Elections finished entering memory cards, or smart cards, from the polls at 11 p.m. While it wasn’t a good turnout locally, Republican Commissioner Harriet Jenkins said, Hanna unofficially received 54 percent of the vote to Kicinski’s 45.5 percent. There were two write-ins.
Jenkins said a lot of people came to the polls hoping to vote for a candidate for Chenango County judge. She blamed the state’s election’s schedule for the confusion.
“How many times did we ever have a June primary, for goodness sake?” she asked. The GOP primary for the judge’s position will take place in September.
Hanna’s victory comes in the newly reconstituted New York state 22nd Congressional District, which stretches from Oneida County to Binghamton.
“I look forward to continuing our important work in Washington for the people of Upstate New York,” Hanna said in a statement issued following his victory. “We have many needs, and there is nothing more important than rebuilding our communities and once again making Upstate New York a place where people can thrive.”
Kicinski, who resides in Earlville, thanked voters who came out to support him as well as his campaign workers and those who endorsed his candidacy.
“We will step back a bit and consider our options,” he said this morning.
Kicinski said he will announce whether he plans to form an independent party line to get on the November ballot during a news conference scheduled at noon today at the courthouse on West Main Street in Norwich.
