New business blooms in Oxford

OXFORD – Cheryl L. Gager and daughter, Ellery, are excitedly getting ready for their Monday Grand Opening of Layla’s Flowers. If location is the key, this new florist moving into the former Oxford Coffee House has the perfect site. Add to that a well cultivated, long-term business plan, and you have a fertile future for success!
Oxford residents have surely missed Tim Ryan’s floral flair since he closed The Whistling Swan’s doors in 2005. For several years now, shoppers were forced to look elsewhere for their floral needs, but not anymore. In a romantic color scheme of rose and sage, business partners, Cheryl and Ellery Gager, will be offering fresh-cut flowers and arrangements daily from their complete house of flowers.
The Gagers did not enter this venture lightly. They worked with the Otsego Chamber of Commerce; Jennifer Tavares, the Commerce Chenango director of Economic Development; Tesha Townsend, branch manager at NBT Bank; and the Oxford Industrial Development Corporation (OIDC).
The OIDC scheduled special meetings, held in the office of Roger Monaco, involving Cheryl to discuss her business plan. Attending were David Emerson - president, Town of Oxford Supervisor Lawrence Wilcox – vice president, Roger Monaco - secretary, and members Village of Oxford Mayor Terry Stark, Brian Bartle, Jeanie Petersen, Don Golden, and Tesha Townsend. After more than satisfactory answers to their inquiries, the OIDC gave Cheryl some financial advice to help the budding entrepreneurs with their goal. (Read more about the OIDC at www.oxfordidc.com)
The Gagers are concentrating their efforts on fresh bouquets and artistic arrangements but will accommodate all floral requests, which includes silk or dried. There will even be some wooden planters and clocks crafted by Cheryl and lacey bouquets and ribbon ornaments/wreaths made by Ellery. There will always be some ready-made floral arrangements on hand for walk-ins, but for people with time to plan, they’ll have design books available to give customers ideas of what can be custom-made —and ‘the sky’s the limit!’
Cheryl and Ellery know many flower traditions and the “language of flowers” that go back to the Victorian era, and some wedding flowers, such as stephanotis, are even supposed to predict a happy marriage. For those who are interested, they will be able to explain the many feelings conveyed by floral colors and the different flower meanings.
Whatever the event, Cheryl said she’s “…willing to go out of her way to make her customers happy!” She has trained, studied, researched, and is a certified floral designer. A former teacher, Cheryl graduated from Unatego High School, and now lives in Mt. Upton. Most people in Oxford know her as the friendly Mirabito Quickway’s business manager where she gained valuable experience. Her partner, Ellery Jean Gager, is a Bainbridge-Guilford High School graduate, a Certified Nursing Assistant, and is also a certified floral designer. Cheryl and Ellery have both done their homework and they’re prepared to stay open regularly 10 hour days - six days-a-week; but right now they’re even open on Sundays from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. to grow a satisfied clientele. They’ll be ready to provide flowers for proms, graduations, hospitals, nursing homes, funerals, all the holidays, and most especially … weddings.
Cheryl and Ellery invite the community to come and visit them now, before the grand opening, to say hello. (They’ll even have coffee on for those who still expect a coffee house!) They would like to get to know more about everyone’s favorite flowers, their wants and needs. It is also possible that you may meet the store’s charming little namesake, Layla, Ellery’s baby daughter. Who knows, maybe in the future Layla will follow in the family business.
