Gus Macker tournament scrambles for “Busters”

nnual Norwich Family Y Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament only days away, organizers of the event are scrambling to find enough “busters” and referees to monitor each game.
Gus Busters, or game officials, are a necessary component in making sure all games run as smoothly as possible. They are needed mainly to keep the peace in each game, said the Y’s Macker tourney director Tom Revoir.
“We are in trouble – more than we’ve ever been. Each year, this is always a problem. Usually by this time, we’re all set, but we’re just not this year,” said Revoir.
Currently, there are enough Busters signed up to officiate games on only two-thirds of the basketball courts that will be set up along East Main Street for the weekend event. The shortage in Gus Busters is leading Revoir to consider alternatives such as leaving the adult courts without Gus Busters for the first time since the tournament began in 1995. “For me to effectively run this event, I need at least 70 Busters,” said Revoir. “It’s going to be very tough for the guys who are volunteering. There’s not going to be much of a break for them,”
The first meeting of Gus Busters was held Tuesday and another is scheduled for 7 tonight at the Norwich Family YMCA. Busters will be covering need-to-know material including pre-game and post-game procedures, making calls, and dealing with confrontation. Revoir is asking that any one interested in helping out attend the meeting. “If after the meeting they’re still interested, we’ll take them,” he said.
The requirements for Gus Busting are pretty straight forward. “You have to have a knowledge of the game,” Revoir said, adding that only the most experienced and confident busters are given a whistle – the whistle is what separates regular Busters from referees, he noted. Only Gus Busters will be needed on the adult courts.
A lack of Busters has become a reoccurring problem in every tournament, worrying Gus Macker coordinators year after year, Revoir went on to say. What’s the biggest reason people are so unwilling to lend a helping hand? According to him, it’s heckling from players and spectators that keep Gus Busters from returning the next year and it prevents potential new Busters from taking an interest.
“Abuse is a real problem. Year in and year out, this is a problem,” he said. This year, officials are showing zero tolerance for taunts and abusive slander from anyone during game time.
“Players and spectators be aware: We will throw you out,” he said. “Gus Busters are volunteers and we’re not going to put up with it.”
