Perkins studio dancers ‘on’ at nationals
NORWICH – Perkins School of the Arts dancers were ‘on’ in Orlando this month. A large group of 40 PSA dancers won awards in every category at the Can Dance competition, the Canadian nationals, held July 1-6 at Disney World.
“The kids danced amazingly. They were so on every time they went out on stage. They maxed out. It was awesome. It’s the first time we’ve won in every category,” said Mikey Perkins, choreographer and teacher.
There were 35 solos and duos and small and large group pieces. Ten students qualified for title awards according to age. Blake Zelesnikar of Binghamton took Mr. Senior Dancer of the Year, Katie Martinez of Norwich and Miami won Miss Dancer of the Year and Chase Benjamin of Waverly won Mr. Junior Dancer of the Year.
The studio for the first time also had two junior level soloists make it into the dance off: Ellie O’Neill of Norwich and Julia Padavona of Vestal.
PSA also earned overall high score for choreography and for a duet with Zelesnikar and Martinez, called “Holding On.”
Perkins said what separated the Norwich school from others in the competition was PSA’s concentration on high intensive partnering.
Modern intensive camp is underway now through Aug. 3. Call 336-6143 for more information about classes beginning in the fall. PSA dancers will be showcased in the gazebo in East Park during Colorscape Chenango Art Festival Sept. 8-9.
