Damaging winds, hail a concern as severe storms threaten today

NORWICH – Severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening could potentially result in damaging winds, hail, heavy rain and possibly tornadoes, according to the City of Norwich Emergency Management Office.
Key indicators, said Emergency Management Officer A. Jones, will be the speed at which this morning’s rain moves through the area. If cloud cover disperses quickly enough for the sun to come out and temperatures rapidly rise, the atmosphere will “quickly destabilize,” increasing the threat for more severe thunderstorms and isolated supercells that could result in tornadoes.
If the cloud cover does not disperse, however, significant supercell development is less likely, he added, although some severe thunderstorms are still possible.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, “potentially widespread and significant” damaging winds – and large hail – are the primary threats, although the possibility of tornadoes along a narrow corridor through parts of New York State and southern New England cannot be ruled out.
Isolated thunderstorms and showers swept across the county throughout the early morning hours, producing some heavy rains, small hail and wind gusts that topped-out at approximately 40 miles per hour.
“Some people may think it’s overreacting ... you can always say that, until something happens,” said Jones. “Today is one of those days when the threat is significantly higher than it normally is. If all the ingredients come together, the potential is there for a severe weather outbreak.”
Yesterday, Governor Andrew Cuomo advised New Yorkers to be prepared.
“I urge all New Yorkers to take caution and pay attention to local radio and television reports for the latest information on the progress of these summer storms," said Cuomo. “Proper precautions undertaken now can help ensure that the strong winds and heavy rain cause as little damage as possible and that families and individuals are kept safe from harm.”
The important thing, said Jones, is for people to stay informed and up to date on weather conditions, be it by radio, television or Internet. Updates will be available at norwichnewyork.net/emergency/weatherwatch, and can also be found on the City of Norwich Emergency Management Office’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
