First-ever Summer Jam draws hundreds to Norwich

NORWICH – Hundreds made their way to East Park yesterday for the Chenango Blues Association’s first-ever Summer Jam, featuring performances by local favorites Woodshed Prophets and Tumbleweed Highway, New York City’s Isto, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad.
The event, sponsored by Preferred Mutual Insurance and Wells Fargo Advisors, went off without a hitch, said Chenango Blues Association President Eric Larsen, who credited his fellow association members for their hard work.
“I thought it went very well for a first time event. You kind of cross your fingers and hope for the best, and it takes a lot of cooperation, but that’s one of the great things about Norwich. From the city PD to the members of the association, it’s a true team effort.”
Said another Blues Association member, “This is such a great thing for the entire community and the association ... this has been a long time coming and we’re fortunate for such a small community to have such world-class acts.”
Woodshed Prophets’ guitarist Dan Hardy said he and his bandmates had “lots of fun” playing Summer Jam for the first time. “This should definitely happen again,” he added. “There’s a lot of talent in this area ... we might as well show it off.”
Nick Andrews, drummer for Tumbleweed Highway, called it “the coolest thing to happen all summer” and “a great way to get family and friends together in downtown Norwich.”
According to Larsen, that was the plan all along: to showcase local talent and provide a family-friendly atmosphere for people of all ages to enjoy.
Linda Palmatier, also a member of the Blues Association, said she believed the day was very successful. “We have some fabulous musicians,” she added. “This is some great entertainment ... this is fun.”
Larsen said he found the musical talent “absolutely outstanding.”
“I think people really enjoyed it ... all the bands, the crowd, the new stage, people were really complimentary. Every band said ‘you’ve got the stage, you’ve got the sound, the lights, everything,’ and that was the goal,” he said.
Prior to taking the stage, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad bassist and vocalist James Searl said the band was excited for the opportunity to play.
“This is our favorite kind of event,” said Searl. “It’s definitely a good time ... this is very cool.”
Said Blues Association member Tim Andrews, “I think it’s just fantastic, we had a great turnout. We’re looking forward to doing it all over again next year.”
Past experience with Blues Fest – now in its 20th year – and the Summer Concert Series, also paid off for the volunteer organizers. For more information on the Chenango Blues Association, the Summer Concert Series, the Aug. 17-18 Chenango Blues Fest and Summer Jam, visit chenangobluesfest.org.
