Organizers prepare for Senior Day at fair

NORWICH – With the Chenango County Fair right around the corner, coordinators for the second annual Senior Day are busy with plans of bringing back last year’s favorite events along with some new activities for this year.
Special events for Senior Day at the fair are set to take place form 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. next Thursday. Anyone 60 years or older will have free admission that day to enjoy a host of free activities and special exhibits tailored toward their interests.
“We want seniors in the area to enjoy the day,” said Senior Day coordinator Judie Wright. “The day is really focused on them. It’s important that seniors who can’t get out and about every day aren’t forgotten.”
This year’s activity lineup include exhibitors and displays throughout the day; Bingo from 10-11 a.m., performances by the Norwich Theater Company, followed by a magician from noon-1 p.m., “Thanks for the Memories” music trivia with Joe Triofero from 1-2; a showing of percheron (draft) horses from 2-3:30; another round of Bingo from 2:30 to 3:30; and topped off by Ritz’s Polka Band from 2:30-4. Other performances can be seen by residents from Chase Nursing Home, Norwich Rehabilitation Center, the NYS Veterans’ Home and UHS-CMH. Performances and activities will be held in the entertainment tent in front of the exhibition hall.
In addition, prizes will be handed out, a $1 food discount coupon will be valid throughout the afternoon, and of course, any and all other fair attractions can be seen throughout the day. Special recognition will also be given this year to 100-year-old Virginia Wentzel Breed, who will be riding as the senior guest of honor during the opening day parade on Aug. 7 because of her dedication and involvement in the community over the years.
Last year, more than 400 seniors made the trip to the fairgrounds to take part in the Senior Day festivities and hopes are to reach out to an even larger crowd this year, said Retired and Senior Volunteer Program coordinator Linda Campbell. “There’s always a day designated to seniors to get free admittance. The last two years, we’ve put our heads together to bring more in and make it more enjoyable for them,” she said.
“We’re hoping to make this a regular day at the fair,” added Wright. “It’s a great opportunity to come together and have a fun day at almost no cost, make new friends and catch up with old friends.”
Seniors walking to the fair and busses dropping seniors off during Senior Day are encouraged to use gate one; seniors driving should use gate three. For additional information about Senior Day, call 336-6414 ext. 103.
