The Place provides kids with a summer of safe fun

NORWICH – The Christian Neighborhood Center of Norwich, better known as The Place, is doing its part to provide kids with a safe and fun summer through its Summer Kids’ Program.
The program, which runs through Aug. 31, offers swimming at Kurt Beyer Pool, trips to the playground at Perry Browne Elementary School, and field trips to area attractions. Since the program began in June, participants have visited Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo in Rome and Filmore Glen State Park at Cayuga Lake. The group is currently planning an end of the summer trip to Dorney Park in Allentown, Pa.
The Place, located behind the Norwich Post Office, is serving 75 children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade who are enrolled in this year’s summer program.
“We really hoped to give the kids an opportunity to do things that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do,” program leader Paula Crawford said.
With 11 staff members, 10 summer youth volunteers, and four summer youth employees, The Place has plenty of eyes and energy to keep the participating children active and protected.
“The program gives kids a fun and safe environment for the summer,” said staff member Jessica Richards.
The summer program also keeps the kids’ minds engaged with visits to the Chenango County Historical Society and weekly trips to Guernsey Memorial Library. Additionally, The Place hosts regular visits by 4-H members and volunteers who teach environmental awareness and crafts such as art and baking.
A daily schedule includes time for fun activities such as kickball, dodgeball and four-square. Friendship and good values are encouraged during every activity of the day.
“We wanted to provide a structured fun time for the kids while their parents are at work,” said staff member Justin Utegg.
The summer program has also provided an opportunity for staff and volunteers to make an impact on their community.
“I want to end this summer knowing that I have had an impact on the kids’ lives,” Utegg said of his goal through the Summer Kids’ Program.
