Courthouse renovations underway

NORWICH – Lady Justice and the Chenango County Courthouse cupola and dome were up close and personal during a slide presentation delivered to the Board of Supervisors on Monday.
Buildings and Grounds Director Julie Gates detailed the cleaning, sealing and painting process that is under way at the 175-year old historical landmark in West Park. Steeple Jacks of America, an Ohio contractor, is restoring and repainting the badly-weathered upper portions. Sherburne craftsman Bruce Webster replicated the architecturally-significant thistle leaves crowning the cornices. Gates described for the board this and other portions of the project, including the gold leaf application process. Gold was applied to the dome, Lady Justice’s scales and the topper on the flag pole in the park.
An old flag pole, wooden shutter and possible ladder were removed from the cupola’s interior for possible display at the upcoming anniversary celebration of the courthouse.
“This is a project that we can all be proud of,” said Chairman Lawrence Wilcox, R-Oxford.
