Schools of the Past - McDonough: Chestnut (?) District #5
The above district school is somewhat of a mystery as to the exact location. According to the 1875 map of Chenango County the school site was on Great Lot #84 which if you bring it to the current Chenango County map is located about in center of the McDonough Township. If you are traveling Route 220 from McDonough to Oxford just outside of McDonough you will find Creek Road (a right hand turn coming out of McDonough). The next road to the right is the Chestnut Road. Information just received – the school was located near Pooler Road and abandoned in 1910.
Mrs. Jennie Preston in her extensive research found this school site to be difficult in location. In conversation with the current historian, this writer will assume the name of the district to be Chestnut. However, if anyone can shed light on this mystery to not hesitate to contact Donna Robb.
As there an almost complete lack of information relevant to this school, this write will quote verbatim, what Mrs. Preston wrote. Relevant to the photo which although dark is what this writer will assume to be the location. “A fieldstone foundation is evidence of District Schoolhouse #5. It is located on a triangular piece of land still marked off by a stonewall. At the entrance are a few maple trees arranged on each side, giving way it’s location on an ordinary (Chestnut) road in McDonough.”
This write will now quote again what Mrs. Preston wrote in her research of McDonough’s district schools. “This particular schoolhouse was not located at an intersection. It took a bit of careful observation to find its location but it was found easily. Several maple trees on the edge of a dirt road were arranged to simulate a gateway into the school yard - a couple on each side. The property itself is a triangular piece found near a bend on the road. A stonewall indicated the exact boundary of the school property. The only evidence left of the building is a field stone foundation which is very moss covered. It isn’t quite as brown in with brush as some other spots.. The ownership of the property is not known to me but it is in the vicinity of several large farms.”
Closing this very brief article, if anyone can as stated above shed light on this schoolhouse mystery, please do not hesitate to contact this writer at pfscott@frontier.com or Donna Robb at djrobb@frontier.net (phone 674-5659 evenings).
