Safety inspections planned for county-owned dams
NORWICH – Two county-owned dams, Clark’s Creek in Oxford and Millbrook One in New Berlin, are due for inspection per regulations adopted by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in 2009.
Chenango County Clerk of the Board RC Woodford presented supervisors on the Ag, Buildings and Grounds Committee on Tuesday with a proposed $25,000 engineering assessment for both flood controls. The work would involve safety inspections and evaluations of spillway capacity, structural stability and reservoir drain capacity.
Both dams were built in the 1970s to protect the villages. The Village of Oxford is contractually responsible for operations and maintenance of Clark’s Creek, but the county owns the property, Woodford said, and is therefore required to meet DEC’s new regulations. In addition to owning the land, the county is also responsible for operations and maintenance at Millbrook One in New Berlin.
