Cyclones sweep home openers

NORWICH – The Norwich Cyclones’ Pop Warner teams made successful debuts this past Sunday at Alumni Field. The C team started the action with a convincing 27-0 victory over Mid-York.
J.T Vinal opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Noah Bufalini added a five-yard touchdown in the second with Kai Scheer adding the point-after touchdown run. Elijah Rodriguez raced 18 yards to paydirt in the third with Cameron Byrne adding the PAT pass from Carson Maynard, and Seth Wessels finished the Norwich scoring with a two-yard run and Dante Geislinger added the point-after touchdown.
On defense Jacob Davis, Collin Montgomery, Kyle Shepard, David Berger, along with Maynard, Bufalini, and Vinal played solid.
In the B team game versus rival Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, it took Peyton Stirone 12 seconds to get the Cyclones on the board as he took the opening kickoff back 65 yards. Drew Walsh had a pair of touchdowns – a four-yard run in the first quarter and a one-yard run in the second. Walsh led all runners with a 60-yard run, also. Stirone added a second touchdown in the second with a 28-yard run. Cameron Ivan added a point-after touchdown with a pass to Stirone. Carter Rudnitski tacked on a 12-yard touchdown with Austin Foulds adding the P.A.T for a 32-6 victory.
The Cyclones’ A team stopped Waterville, 21-6. Cole Rifanburg led the Cyclones attack with an 18-yard touchdown in the first quarter and also adding a two-point extra-point kick. Rifanburg also hooked up with a 38-yard pass to Johnathan Heggie to lead at halftime, 14-0. In the third quarter Rifanburg returned a punt to the Waterville 15-yard line setting up the final scoring with Zack Race plugging it in the endzone with the two-yard run. Chris Brown adding the P.A.T with a pass to Timmy Thompson. Carter Hubbard, Brennan Slater, Jacob Franklin and Big Bird Alex Wehrli led the defense. Nick Stirone added two interceptions.
The Cyclones D team had a strong showing Sunday in a controlled scrimmage with Vernon-Verona-Sherrill. Time and scoring were not kept.
The Cyclones are at Camden next Saturday with key matchups on all levels with the D team starting at 1 p.m., C team at 3 p.m., B team at 5 p.m. and the A team contest starting at 7 p.m.
