LEA contract awards being calculated
NORWICH – No word yet on the amount Chenango County will have to payout to law enforcement deputies after the results of a lengthly interest arbitration period were made known last week.
The contract was finalized after 18 months of arbitration that was preceeded by months of unsuccessful negotiations between the county and the union representing law enforcement deputies and road patrol. The bargaining unit received 3 percent base salary increases and other compensation over a two-year term commencing Jan. 1, 2010 and expiring Dec. 31, 2011, according to the New York State Public Employment Relations Board.
The deputies and road patrol unit’s contract had expired Dec. 31, 2009. Each member of the unit that is still on the active payroll of the county (approximately 22) and any retiree who worked during the period covered by the award will receive a retroactive payment, according to the PERB website.
County supervisors were expected to review the increases last week in committee, but the county treasurer’s office is still in the midst of interpreting and calculating retroactive and longevity amounts, said Chenango County Attorney Alan Gordon. Members of the Finance Committee referred the agreement for the full board’s consideration next Monday without discussing any amounts.
Supervisors did, however, go into an executive session to discuss negotiations with the Chenango County Sheriff’s Employee’s Association, the labor union for corrections officers and corrections staff at the Public Safety Facility. A moderator listened to testimony at a hearing on Aug. 15. Gordon said the county had not received the results of that hearing. Corrections officers and jail staff have been without a contract since December, 2009.
