First STAC win for NHS in five seasons

BOYS’ SOCCER

Norwich 4, Chenango Valley 1
NORWICH – Norwich produced its best offensive performance in two seasons, and won its first STAC league game in fIVE campaigns toppling Chenango Valley Monday evening.
Chris Trevisani scored a pair of goals for the Tornado (2-3), who led 2-1 at halftime. “Pretty much everyone is back from last year’s team, and I think the returning people have really turned it up a bunch this season,” said Norwich coach Steve Prime.
Trevisani scored on a nifty give-and-go pass from Dean Weaver for the opening goal, and Weaver connected on an 18-yard direct kick for the one-goal halftime advantage.
Cameron Prime scored on his second throw-in season, again after a deflection in the penalty box. Trevisani beat multiple defenders for the final goal, that one coming with 45 seconds left. “We kept the ball in their end quite a bit, and our offense was just clicking today,” Prime said.
Norwich plays at Johnson City Friday.

UV wins Downsville tourney
DOWNSVILLE – Following a hard-fought win on Friday over host Downsville, Unadilla Valley topped Walton in the Downsville Tournament championship game, 3-1, Saturday afternoon.
All of the game’s goals were scored in an abbreviated second half. Nate Mackey broke the scoreless tie tucking in a rebound after teammate Collin Izard’s shot 1:30 into the second period. Izard assisted on Sean Smith’s goal, and following a Walton goal, Izard provided a two-goal cushion.
The game was halted with 12 minutes remaining due to thunder showers. “I knew we had to score, and score quick,” said UV coach Ryan Houck. “I knew there was no way we were getting through the full 40 minutes of the second half.”
The Storm, facing coach Houck’s hometown team in the opening round, again played to a scoreless first half, but caught a break when David Schwab was taken down inside the 18-yard box. Schwab made good on the penalty kick with 16:48 left. “They played a defensive formation that made it difficult to spread out and score on,” Houck said of the Downsville game. “Often, when we were on offense, they had eight or nine guys inside the box. That drastically eliminated shooting and passing lanes.”
Kyle King made nine stops for UV to record the shutout. “This was the first tournament championship for us in many years, and I know we’ve never won a tourney in my time as head coach,” Houck said. “It was an exciting weekend.”

GREENE - Greene used two early goals to sustain it in Monday’s non-league victory over Chenango Forks.
Alex Leone had both of the Trojans’ goals, the first coming on a combination play from Karl Zaengle at 27:38. Leone capitalized on a Forks turnover to net the insurance goal four minutes later.
“After we scored the two goals, we were just kind of hanging on,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Forks put together some nice possessions, but our defense and Connor (Moriarty, goalie) had phenomenal games.”
The victory comes a few days after the Trojans lost their first game of the season, a 2-1 setback to Delhi. “This was a much-needed win,” Tallman said. “It was nice to play a larger school like Chenango Forks, and realize we can play with them and take home the victory.”

ADIRONDACK – Sherburne-Earlville lost its second straight game giving up a single goal in the first half to Adirondack Monday.
Adirondack’s Josh Howland tucked away the winning shot after skipping past an S-E defender who had tripped and fallen. “Adirondack is a physical team, and we had trouble adjusting to that in the first half,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “In the second half, we probably possessed the ball 80 percent of the time. We had numerous shots, we just couldn’t get it past them.”
Nino Magro had a close-range shot in the final minute that Adirondack goalie Alex Black saved to preserve the win.
