Charges pending in Pitcher shootout
NORWICH – The Chenango County District Attorney’s Office has issued a warrant for the arrest of a Norwich man shot by sheriff’s deputies following a stand-off in Pitcher that involved a group of innocent bystanders and the man’s nine-year-old son.
Patrick W. Ford II, 42, remains in serious condition following surgery at the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. He was shot in the upper torso after repeatedly firing a Glock 40. caliber pistol – which authorities say he reloaded at least twice during the incident – at sheriff’s deputies and a New York State Police officer, as well as a number of innocents, who were uninjured on Aug. 30.
District Attorney Joseph McBride confirmed that Ford remains hospitalized and is being guarded by a sheriff’s deputy until he can be returned to Chenango County. At this time, he is charged with one count of first degree attempted murder of a police officer, a class A-I felony.
Arraignment proceedings will be held once Ford is released from the hospital and if he is indicted by a Chenango County grand jury.
Said McBride, “We will proceed appropriately from there.”
Ford was originally listed in critical condition, but has since been downgraded to serious.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices continue to investigate the incident, which began following what had first been reported as a motor vehicle accident. It’s alleged that Ford struck a mailbox with his Chevrolet pick-up truck, leaving the roadway and becoming entangled in a utility pole guide wire near a residence at 760 State Highway 23 in the Town of Pitcher. Ford then “engaged in a physical confrontation” with a male resident of the nearby home, according to authorities, pulling the Glock 40. caliber pistol and placing it to the man’s head. The male resident – after escaping Ford – and several other residents of the nearby home, barricaded themselves in a back bedroom, according to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting Jr. They later fled to a nearby relative’s house after Ford allegedly smashed out a window and fired several shots into the house. As they were fleeing, Ford is said to have fired additional shots. Ford was shot by a sheriff’s deputy soon thereafter, stabilized by a nearby EMS crew, that was on standby, and airlifted via helicopter to Upstate Medical.
