SPCA to host third ‘Dog Walk’ fundraiser this weekend
NORWICH – Did someone say “walk?” The Chenango SPCA hosts its third annual Dog Walk and Alumni Parade fundraiser Sunday at Weiler Park from noon to 3 p.m. Proceeds will be used exclusively to shelter and feed homeless animals. The event is open to anyone interested, but the SPCA wishes to extend a special invitation to owners of dogs adopted from the Norwich shelter, said organizer Tracy Carman.
The event has “no admission fee, anyone can come and walk their dog if they want to,” said Carman. But she reminds participants to “please keep in mind, this is a fundraising event for Chenango SPCA.” Attendees are encouraged to get pledges from the community sponsoring them for the one-mile walk around the park.
“Even just a $5 pledge is appreciated,” said SPCA President Courtney Sullivan. Prizes are awarded to the top fundraisers and the person or team that raises the most will win a custom-engraved trophy with their name on it, along with the placement of their picture in the dog walk hall of fame, and a special tour of the SPCA facility.
After the mile walk, dog owners can show off their dogs in a pet costume contest. “There are three categories for the pet costume contest: Best team costume, funniest costume, and most original costume,” said Carman. Also for dog owners, a doggie day spa run by Oxford Grooming, and The Artist’s Palette will be on hand to provide some dog grooming and photography services, she said. The doggie day spa includes some grooming services and pools for the dogs to splash around in. But as a safety precaution, “dogs cannot be off their leashes and they must be under control,” said Sullivan.
Participants without dogs are also going to have plenty to do. If they feel so inclined, they may walk alongside dog owners on the walk around the park. Afterwards, “they can check out the exhibitor and vendor tables, watch the Straight Chuters dog agility and Wylde Pups lure coursing demos, enjoy the pet costume contest, get some lunch from the Oxford Lions food wagon, and listen to some great music from DJ Jim Baldwin,” said Carman. All participants will also get a chance to win goodies through the purchase of raffle tickets.
The SPCA will be hosting both an informational booth and an Alumni Tent where dog owners who adopted from the shelter can stop by and get a special ribbon for their pet.
Pre-registration, although not a prerequisite for attendance, will earn participants a chance at further prizes and give dog owners the opportunity to sign their pets up for the dog luring course. The dogs taking part in lure coursing will chase an artifical lure through a course designed to simulate the thrill of hunting. Dog agility and lure coursing demonstrations will be exhibited by Straight Chuters and Wylde Pups, respectively.
The SPCA has served the Chenango community for over 100 years, working to shelter homeless animals and provide them with permanent housing. “The money from the fundraiser goes directly to the animals’ shelter, food, care and vaccinations,” said Sullivan. “We are a not-for-profit organization that uses fundraisers to survive,” she said.
“For me, the board and the staff, it’s all about our passion for the animals. They need a voice and we try to give them one. They need a forever home and we try and get that for them too,” said Sullivan. But this weekend is “going to be all about giving people and their dogs a great time,” she said.
