Norwich man charged with growing pot; 200 firearms discovered

NORWICH – One week after executing a search warrant at a County Road 32 residence in the Town of Norwich, the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has released details on the search, which led to the confiscation of approximately two pounds of marijuana and a cache of illegal firearms, including handguns and automatic weapons.

Henry W. Hemsley, 73, has been charged with unlawful growing of cannabis, a misdemeanor, accused of having 45 marijuana plants growing on his property. In addition, during a search of Hemsley’s residence, deputies discovered approximately two pounds of processed marijuana; several illegal handguns; and more than 200 long guns, including several fully automatic rifles.

Hemsley was initially charged with unlawful growing of cannabis and one count of criminal possession of a weapon, both misdemeanors, although an investigation into the matter continues and further charges are pending. He was arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and remanded to the Chenango County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash bail.
