NORWICH – On Wednesday, the Norwich Post office will be the next to host the Civil War Pictorial Postmark. Each town in Chenango County is participating and, so far, each event has been different and interesting. Some postal patrons have discovered they have ancestors who served in the Civil War and want, or already had, their images depicted on the postmarked envelopes. Collectors have been taking advantage of the event by purchasing quantities of the envelopes to save or sell at a later date. In addition to the local interest, requests for the envelopes have come in from all over the United States and around the world. Countries like Germany, Japan, Great Britain, France, Holland, Australia and even a few countries in Africa have sent in their requests and items to be stamped.
You can purchase the printed envelopes at your local post office or bring in post cards or envelopes to be stamped. Remember, if you mail in your items, you must include a postage paid, self-addressed return envelope. Each postmark event will last for thirty days from the date of the event.
The U.S. Post Office is pleased to participate in local events and this is one way for them to help you commemorate a special event. This event was started by the Chenango County Civil War Commemoration Project committee in conjunction with the US Post Office and their release of Civil War Commemorative Forever Stamps. Starting in 2011, the US Post Office released two Civil War Commemorative Forever Stamps and will continue to release two new stamps each year through 2015.
On Aug. 15, the Sherburne Post Office held their postmark and you can still purchase envelopes or postcards from them. The Sherburne Historian, Rose Wellman, took an image of the Sherburne’s Civil War monument and printed post cards to have stamped. You can purchase these cards at the post office in Sherburne or at the Historian’s Office located in the log cabin at 11 School Street.
