Oxford Village Board to consider gas drilling moratorium tonight

OXFORD – Tonight, at 7:30, the Oxford Village Board will consider a referral to institute a one-year moratorium on natural gas drilling in the village.
The referral comes after Oxford Village Planning Board members, meeting Monday night, voted 3 to 1 to propose it. Planning Board member Ann Scorza made the motion and John Todaro seconded it. Nathanial Emerson voted no, and Greg LaMonica recused himself.
To accommodate an anticipated large audience, the Village Board meeting has been moved from the town hall to the second floor of the Oxford American Legion Hall, 5 Washington Avenue, Planning Board Chairman Anna Stark said.
The planning board had been studying natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing for a number of months. A moratorium has been part of the discussion since June. Various members of the village planning board traveled to well and compression station sites in Pennsylvania and the public was invited to special presentations by experts advocating for both sides of the shale drilling controversy.
