Historical Society presents ‘The Guns of Oxford’

OXFORD – On Tuesday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., the Oxford Historical Society (OHS) is presenting “The Guns of Oxford” a history of their excellent rifle collection which will be on display. Local firearms authority Steve Kingsley will explain the types and their histories.
The OHS houses several fascinating weapons in their collection, often overlooked when visitors come to the Depot-Museum. These extraordinary specimens include a very rare British “Brown Bess” from the Revolutionary War, hunting rifles of the early 1800’s, Civil War weapons, and later military weapons used by Oxford soldiers. Of special interest will be the most famous rifle in Chenango County’s history. Come to learn who owned it and what made it famous!
Local gun expert, Steve Kingsley will explain everything about the guns… “lock, stock, and barrel!” Discussion will cover their mechanical function and their many uses. Guns have been important in Oxford’s history: for putting food on the table, providing recreation from our earliest days, to going off to war with our boys. Kingsley will also explain how the long guns advanced over time and other interesting lore. This will be a most enlightening and enjoyable evening.
This high-caliber program is open to members and non-members. A large crowd is expected so it is advisable to come early. Refreshments will be served after the program.
Remember to take the alternate route to the OHS Depot-Museum, at 1 Depot St., due to the Main Street Bridge construction. For more info call: (607) 821-1223 or email: Museum@OxfordNY.com .
The not-for-profit OHS hosts educational and cultural programs free to the public; however, contributions will be gladly accepted. On the web visit Museum.OxfordNY.com . The Museum will be open one last Thursday, Oct. 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. (or by appt.) until spring. The winter program, Dec. 4, will be held at the Oxford Library.
