Columbus Church hosts 91st Harvest Dinner next week
COLUMBUS – Ninety-one years ago in the township of Columbus, through the dissolving of the memberships of the Congregational Church and the Universalist Church, the Columbus Community Church came into existence. Soon after the church was organized, the ladies of the parish formed the Columbus Ladies Aid. Their first fund raising effort was a Harvest Dinner, and ninety-one years later this annual fund raiser continues in the hamlet.
Members and supporters of the Good Neighbors are busily engaged in preparing for the annual Harvest Dinner, Thursday, Oct. 4. Main fare is roast beef and there are two serving times: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Dinner is served in The Whitney House, 4311 State Hwy 80, Town of Columbus. The former Community House was renovated in 1990, and named in honor of the late Ted and Mercian Whitney who were great benefactors of the renovation project. Admission continues to be by free will donation as was established in 1921. Take out dinners will be available at a flat rate of $8 per dinner.
Margaret Foster of Smyrna is the overall planner for the dinner. Chefs for the event are Margaret Foster, Smyrna, and Joseph Taronto, South New Berlin, graduate of the American Culinary Institute. Sandra Strait serves as the president of the CCC Good Neighbors. To serve the 800-plus diners, it requires a volunteer staff of approximately 75 people.
More than 350 pounds of beef will be roasted, and the dinner requires 400 pounds of mashed potatoes, and more than 100 pies are solicited. Diners make their selection of food from the buffet and salad tables. Food is served on china plates and the commercial dishwasher is kept steaming from morning until night.
Profit from the annual Harvest Dinner (which totaled more than $5,000 in 2011) is used toward the many projects that the CCC Good Neighbors provide for the parish and the community at large throughout the year.
Rev. Stephen L. Reese has served as the full-time pastor of the parish since July 1980.
