City PD to hold fifth Prescription Drug Take-Back Day
NORWICH – The Norwich City Police Department, partnered with the federal Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, will hold a fifth National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Norwich Police Station, 18 East Main St.
Those wishing to dispose of what Norwich Police Chief Joseph Angelino called “potentially dangerous” expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs can do so by dropping them off at the station’s front lobby. The service, added Angelino, is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
“We conducted this same event in October, 2011, and it was an overwhelming success,” said Angelino. “We anticipate we’ll be just as busy this Saturday.”
Last September, more than 242,000 pounds – 121 tons – of prescription drugs were turned in countrywide at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA, with more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement agencies participating, including the Norwich PD. According to Angelino, the city’s police force reported hundreds of pounds of unwanted narcotics collected.
