Downsville beats Norwich in Oxford final

OXFORD – Downsville, losers to Norwich at last year’s Oxford Tournament, avenged that defeat to win the tourney title on Saturday.
Kendra Lacey had her second hat trick in as many games, and Kaileen Townsend added her second consecutive two-goal game. Townsend scored the game’s opening goal 6 1/2 minutes into the opening half, and the victors tacked on three more goals over the next 24 minutes to build a 4-0 halftime lead over the Tornado.
Norwich’s Alyssa Welch scored on a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes to break up the shutout.
With the consolation game headed toward a tie, B-G’s Taylor Palmitier netted the game-winning goal with 1:40 left in the second extra period giving the Bobcats a 4-3 victory over host Oxford.
Four different B-G players scored, and Kylee O’Hara’s tally with just 45 seconds left in regulation forced the extra periods.
Sarah Renaud had two goals for Oxford, the second with 14:21 left in the second half gave Oxford a 3-2 lead.

WEST WINFIELD – Sherburne-Earlville played to its second tie this season Friday night against Mount Markham in extending its unbeaten string to four games.
After Mount Markham’s Tyler Ploughs scored in the first five minutes, S-E was able to answer back in the 25th minute on Carter Cole’s unassisted goal.
S-E had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second half as Elijah Morris ripped a close-range shot that was punched away by Mustangs keeper Mike Gras. The Marauders’ record now stands at 6-3-2 overall.

VESTAL - Greene turned back an early surge from Vesta scoring four goals over the final 17 minutes of the first half to improve to 9-0 on the season.
“It was great for ur defense; they started out like gangbusters and really pressured us,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We had to make some pressure stops, then we were able to get it going.”
Jahna Driscoll’s pass to the far post was tipped in by Jessica Durdon for the opening goal 13 minutes into play. Tiffany Borst and Driscoll added goals in the last five minutes of the half. Borst and Conroe were the lone two-goal scorers for Greene. Emma Anderson added a goal in the second half.
“It was senior night and it was emotional for the girls,” Carlin said. “The first part of the game we had to settle in and get our emotions in check.”
Carlin was complimentary of her substitutes, who maintained the shutout over the second half, along with sweeper Caitlin Bryce. “Caitlin was just so steady back there,” Carlin said.
Greene is at Windsor Thursday.

NORWICH – Norwich finished strong with wins over the final three events in a dual meet loss to STAC power Owego Friday evening.
Ravyn Benedict started the final trio of wins in the backstroke, and that was followed by victories from Nicole Mealy in the breaststroke and the 400-yard free relay team. Earlier in the meet, junior Erin Gawronski took first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:22.78), and her time was just shy of her 2011 Class B sectional meet time that earned her a second place.
“Facing the good teams can only help my kids and push them toward better times,” said Norwich coach Kevin Diefenbacher. “I had five personal-best times tonight, and my young kids are really coming along.”
Norwich (3-2) hosts Maine-Endwell on Tuesday.

At the McQuaid Invitational, Norwich’s boys placed 22nd out of 29 times, while the Tornado girls fielded a complete team and wound up 29th out of 34 squads in the biggest meet the Tornado have raced in to date.
Robert Jeffrey paced the Tornado boys running to a 25th-place finish out of 216 runners in 16:25. Matt Murray was next for NHS timing a 16:47 for 44th.
Martha Clemens wound up 111th out of 246 finishers to lead Norwich’s ladies timing 21:23. Senior Faith Pike, who is returning from injury, was 123rd in 21:35.

UTICA – Sherburne-Earlville brought two complete teams to the 70th Annual E.J. Herman Invitational, and continue to build toward the late-season league and sectional meets, said head coach Anne Geary.
The girls’ squad had its first complete team for an invitational, and Gabby Huff once again led the way timing 26:29 to place 96th. Kayleigh Scott was less than two minutes back timing 28:20.
On the boys’ swide, Ian Benedict and Ryan Palmiter each dropped two minutes off of their time from last year’s meet. Benedict hit the wire at just under 20 minutes (19:59) to placed 64th out of 170, and Palmiter was 75th in 20:09. “It was a good race for the guys,” Geary said. “They’re running well as a group, and they are certainly enthusiastic.”
S-E returns to action Wednesday when it visits Sauquoit Valley. This coming Saturday, the Marauders host their annual invitational. Varsity races are scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
