Sherburne-Earlville clinches Section III playoff spot

FOOTBALL

Sherburne-Earlville 24, Clinton 0
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s players went mud diving Friday night, and head coach Mike Jasper?  He was soaked by the team watercooler. The Marauders had reason to celebrate on senior recognition night as they clinched their first Section III postseason appearance with a shutout win over Clinton.
Austin Jasper ran for 180 yards and one touchdown, and Jasper also caught a three-yard TD pass from Matt Smith. S-E overcame a 38-yard pass by Clinton on the first play from scrimmage, and grounded out a win with a no-frills offensive approach.
“We’re happy and proud to do that,” said head coach Mike Jasper speaking of the playoff berth. “We wish we could have won one of those two tight games in our league and get a higher seed. Maybe it’s not such a bad idea to go play on the turf. We know we’re going to see somebody really good.”
Jasper thought Clinton would try to catch S-E by surprise early, and his premonition came to bear. Clinton perfectly executed a halfback option pass as running back Firestar Gomez hit receiver Kolby Nowakowski on a 38-yard option pass deep into S-E territory. The Marauders’ defense eventually held, and Clinton did not threaten to score again.
“The defense was able to make a big play, and we just buckled down after their big play,” Jasper said. “That play was really the only frustrating part. We drove the ball and just mudded it out.”
Garrett DuVall completed S-E’s first scoring drive on a two-yard run, Jasper made it 12-0 after a 21-yard scoring burst, and Jasper’s TD reception from Smith made it an 18-point bulge at halftime.
Julienne Alsheimer capped the scoring with a two-yard TD run late in the third quarter. The Marauders finished with 336 yards rushing on 48 carries, and held Clinton to just 42 yards rushing. “We wanted to take advantage of our size and strength, and the biggest thing was to not commit the turnovers,” Jasper said. “We knew that Clinton was not the better team, and we wanted to make sure we didn’t give them hope. We pounded it and stuck with the game plan.”
S-E plays at Skaneateles Friday at 7 p.m.

Bainbridge-Guilford 19, Oxford 14
OXFORD – Staked to a 19-point halftime lead, Bainbridge-Guilford held on for a five-point victory over Oxford Friday night.
B-G hit the Blackhawks in the mouth early on with a pair of long TD runs, and appeared on cruise control entering the second half with a 19-0 lead.
“There are no moral victories in football, but I was proud of how we played in the second half and fought back,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “I don’t think we lost this game as much as we ran out of time.”
Oxford mounted a late drive starting deep in its own end and moved to midfield. A fumble with 58 seconds remaining was recovered by the Bobcats to end the comeback effort.
Early on, it was all B-G (5-1). On the first play from scrimmage, B-G senior Jake Mazzarella scored on a 58-yard run. Later in the first quarter, Bobcats quarterback Corbin Palmer connected with Tyler Ouimet on a 68-yard TD pass. Palmer’s one-yard TD keeper in the second quarter padded the advantage.
“We were able to make a couple of adjustments and give them a different look on defense in the second half,” Dayton said. “All the credit goes to B-G and coach (Tim) Mattingly. They did a good job over there.”
Paul Wonka, returning from injury, scored on a one-yard run in the third quarter, and Bryan Simpson’s five-yard TD run coupled with a Wonka two-point chaser closed the deficit to five points. Wonka was again the Blackhawks’ workhorse rushing for 132 yards. Oxford quarterback Jody Smith threw for 171 yards, and Andrew Golden caught seven balls for 124 yards.
Mazzarella, the area’s leading rusher, ran for 163 yards to move over 1,000 yards for the season. Mazzarella is now at 1,029 yards with at least three games left in the season.
Oxford (2-4) hosts Moravia next week. “The goal now is to go 3-0 the rest of the way and have two winning seasons in a row,” Dayton said. “That hasn’t happened here in quite a few seasons.”

Greene 36, Newark Valley 14
GREENE – With the offensive line playing like it had a chip on its shoulder, Greene rekindled its dominant running game scoring five rushing touchdowns and rushing for 321 yards in its home finale Friday.
Dan Treadwell and Trevor Parrish had a pair of TD runs, and backup Cole Browning scored on a short jaunt in the fourth quarter as the Trojans handed Newark Valley its first division loss. Starting linemen Chris Kehoe at center, guards Alex Kozisky and Trevor Flohr, and tackles Dan Haskell, Garrett Huttleston, and Andy Walker had a lot to say in Greene’s success. “The line did a heck of a job blocking and opening up holes,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “They showed that we could run the ball.”
In back-to-back losses to Chenango Forks and Sidney, the Trojans averaged less than 100 yards rushing per game. Against the Cardinals, the ground-based attack produced scoring drives of 11, 14, 14, and nine plays. “We didn’t have any home runs, but we had consistent drives and definitely wore them down by the fourth quarter.”
Trailing NV 7-6 in the second quarter, Parrish’s 11-yard scoring run combined with Mike Beckwith’s two-point run had Greene in front for good. Parrish led Greene with 87 yards rushing, Treadwell had 83, and Beckwith ran for 66.
Greene (4-2) plays at Whitney Point Saturday.

Unatego 37, Unadilla Valley 16
OTEGO – Unatego inched closer to a top seed in the Class D ranks building a 37-0 lead over UV in Friday’s home victory.
Tyler Butler ran for a two three-yard TDs in the first quarter, and he added a 10-yard TD pass to Jon Wingate in a 21-0 first quarter.
“Unatego came out to play, and we watched them for a whole quarter before we started to play,” said UV coach Daryl Decker. “After the first quarter, it was a 16-16 game.”
David VanAlstine ran for 162 yards, and his 41-yard TD run at the end of the third quarter upped the Spartans’ lead to 37-0.
Kurt Haycook scored on 19-yard TD run for UV in the final quarter, and Kody Homann tallied on a five-yard scoot. Haycook threw for 147 yards, but was intercepted three times by the Spartans. “Unatego has a great offensive attack and a solid defense. They are the best team in our division by far,” Decker said. “After we made some adjustments on both sides of the ball, we gave them a much better game. Our kids played hard and never quit.”
