GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Greene 93, Windsor 75
GREENE – Greene won its third straight meet and broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay in Tuesday’smeet against visiting Windsor.
Chelsea Carlson, Becca Smith, Jenny Yeager, and Emily Bertram swam a 1:49.57, one of the top six times in Section IV this season. It broke the mark of 1:50.20 set in 2009. “Last year, we loaded up our relay in the last meet, and went 1:50.21 – one hundredth of a second off of the record,” said Greene coach Mike Platta. “We didn’t want that to happen again. We were close to breaking the record in our last meet, so we put that same team back together, and they did so well.”
Greene won 10 of 12 events to move one win from the .500 mark. Bertram, Yeager, Carlson, and Smith had mulitiple wins on the day. Julia Arboit took the 50 freestyle, and Payton Cutting was a winner in the 100 breaststroke.

FIELD HOCKEY

Sherburne-Earlville 2, Oneida 1
ONEIDA – Sherburne-Earlville coach Sheila Cooman hopes six wins will be enough to qualify for the Section III playoffs.
The Marauders, one-goal winners – and losers – in the majority of their games this season finished the 2012 regular season on the upswing with a road victory at Oneida Tuesday afternoon.
Emma Hodges figured in both S-E goals assisting on Megan Viera’s tip-in with 7:16 left in the first half, then sending a pass to Shelby Scheffler for the two-goal lead just five minutes into the second half. “We’ve been in just about every game, and really, in the losses it’s been a moment or two of breaking down or losing focus,” Cooman said. “Some teams can get away with mistakes, but this season, we couldn’t get away with any.”
With a mix of veterans and youth, the Marauders may be a pesky opponent for any Section III opponent, provided S-E receives a playoff bid. “Our midfield has stepped up during the season, and our defensive players, and our defensive players have been strong from beginning to end,” Cooman said.
Cooman said the Marauders (6-10) will learn their playoff fate at Friday’s Section III seeding meeting.
