Jugglers quarterback lights up Marauders for seven total TDs

Notre Dame/Rome Catholic 56, Sherburne-Earlville 29
WATERVILLE – Sophomore Kevin Warmack had a 16th birthday to remember Saturday afternoon at Waterville High School.
The Notre Dame/Rome Catholic quarterback threw for five touchdowns and ran for two more leading his club to a 56-29 rout of Sherburne-Earlville.
Warmack directed his team to touchdowns on eight of its first nine possessions and 541 yards of total offense against an S-E club that has now allowed over 1,000 yards of offense over the past two weeks.
“We’ve struggled defensively, no doubt, the past two weeks,” said S-E coach Mike Jasper. “This team (Notre Dame/Rome Catholic) isn’t as good as Skaneateles (winners over S-E two weekends ago), but they threw it well. Our secondary struggled where we stepped up and let the ball get behind us, and a couple of times they outjumped us. If we don’t give up those big pass plays, we’re in the game. Those types of plays are killing us.”
But the Marauders, much like last week, did give up copious big plays.
Warmack had his club on the board less than three minutes into the game driving his club 65 yards for the opening score. His 17-yard TD hookup with Sonny Sorce started the TD parade. Late in the first quarter, Warmack called his own number on a 60-yard option keeper lifting the advantage to 14-0.
Warmack went to the air for three TD passes in the second quarter, all to 6-foot-4 receiver Zane Smith. Smith outleapt S-E d’backs Felix Rodriguez and Ben Khoury on a 35-yard TD, scored a on 23-yard TD pass on a fourth down play, and completed the trio of six-pointers on a 33-yard toss where he again outjumped the S-E secondary.
The Marauders’ lone response was Matt Smith’s 5-yard TD pass to Austin Jasper. Still, The Marauders found themselves in a 35-7 halftime hole, one that was too steep to dig out.
“We do emphasize pass defense, but we have some injuries and some young kids back there,” Jasper said. “The one thing about this team is that it doesn’t quit, and it continues to play hard every down.”
The Marauders traded touchdowns with the Jugglers in the second half. S-E Sophomore quarterback Cody Marango threw TD passes of 31 yards to Devven Ferris and a perfect 34-yard strike to Khoury, while sophomore running back Garrett DuVall added a one-yard TD plunge.
Warmack and his crew were equal to that task. Warmack added another TD pass to Sorce, and ran in his second TD midway through the fourth quarter. Reserve running back Ryan Halpin hit paydirt from 39 yards out on his only carry of the game.
S-E’s 2012 season may be over, Jasper said. A week nine opponent has yet to be scheduled, and Jasper was not optimistic his team would find a team to play by Monday. Still, the 4-4 record is the third straight non-losing season for the Marauders, the first time that has occurred in 11-man football in 40 years.
“We’ve played playoff-caliber teams the last two weeks, and we have to learn to play at their level if we want to aspire to take the next step,” Jasper said.

Groton 30, Bainbridge-Guilford 23
GROTON – Bainbridge-Guilford’s second playoff appearance against Groton in four years will be remembered for the missed opportunities.
The Bobcats forced three turnovers, but were held out of the end zone all three times, despite prime field position as the Indians came from behind in a Section IV Class D quarterfinal.
Zeke Wright’s second TD of the game, a 35-yard run with seven minutes left in the fourth, gave the Indians the lead for good. Wright finished with 229 yards rushing, and added a 75-yard TD scamper in the third quarter.
“We had some missed opportunities, and you can’t leave points like that on the field,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly.
Groton pulled within 23-22 on Joey Scaglione’s nine-yard run. On the ensuing kickoff, B-G was unable to handle the short boot leading to a Groton recovery. Four plays later, Wright scored the winner.
The Bobcats’ Jake Mazzarella rushed for 169 yards on 15 carries and two scores. He had a 32-yard TD run in the first quarter, and extended his team’s lead to 16-8 on a 55-yard scoring dash in the third. Quarterback Corbin Palmer found Tyler Ouimet on a 20-yard scoring pass that snapped a 16-16 tie.
“It’s a disappointing result because it’s a game we thought we could have won,” Mattingly said. “Give Groton credit. They have some good running backs, and we weren’t able to come up with the stops when we needed them.”

Delhi 36, Unadilla Valley 12
NEW BERLIN – Delhi went right at Unadilla Valley with its power running game, and the Storm interior buckled in the face of the Bulldogs’ superior manpower up front.
Brian Ingram ran for 231 yards and three touchdowns, and Ryan Telian added 128 yards rushing and a score as Delhi pulled to .500 (4-4) on the season. By game’s end, Delhi had 417 yards rushing, while averaging a nifty eight-plus yards per tote.
“It was Delhi football, and the running stats tell the story,” said UV coach Daryl Decker.
Ingram scored on runs of 22 and five yards as his club opened a 14-0 lead in the first. The advantage grew to 20-6 at halftime with UV scoring on Kurt Haycook’s six-yard scoring toss to senior fullback Tom Meyers.
The Storm struggled with the passing game in the second half as early-evening fog rolled in off the Unadilla River. “You couldn’t see the players on the field by the end of the game,” Decker said. “Delhi also did a good job with its down-field coverage to take away all but one of our big plays.”
With Delhi’s victory well in hand, UV scored its second touchdown on a 65-yard pass hookup from Haycook to Kody Homann. Homann had 110 yards receiving and 51 yards rushing to top the UV attack. Haycook was 10-for-20 for 135 yards.

Oxford 34, Delhi 6
HANCOCK – Oxford had its best offensive balance in nearly a month, and went on to whip Deposit-Hancock Friday afternoon.
The Blackhawks ran for 183 yards and passed for 136 more. Senior running back Paul Wonka rushed for 143 yards and one TD, and moved over 1,000 yards rushing for the season, his second straight 1,000-yard campaign. “We did a good job of running the ball, and did a good job of controlling the clock,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton.
In turn, the Blackhawks’ passing game was much more effective. Jody Smith had TD passes of 36 and 19 yards to Andrew Golden, and Smith’s 21-yard scoring toss to Cameron Heggie gave Oxford a two-touchdown lead in the opening quarter.
With the lead at four touchdowns, sophomore Colton Langille returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown. It was Langille’s second pick six of the season, and firmly stamped the Blackhawks’ third win this season.
“It’s been frustrating the way the season has gone because we thought we would be in playoff contention,” Dayton said. “But we played well this Friday, and we hope to end on a high note for the seniors by winning the last two games.”
Oxford (3-5) meets Whitney Point in its season final this coming weekend.
