Cyclones sweep playoff games, head to league championships

The Norwich Cyclones’ A, B, and C teams swept Tri-Valley League Pop Warner playoff games last weekend to advance to the league championships this weekend.
The Cyclones A team downed Oneida 18-0 Saturday in Oneida, and advanced to the league finals against Camden.
The Cyclones took the opening kickoff and drove to the Oneida 16 only to be held on downs. On the third ensuing defensive down, Paden Burlison intercepted an Oneida pass and raced 10 yards for Norwich’s first score.
Cole Rifanburg had a four-yard TD run just before the half making it 12-0. Carter Hubbard finished the scoring on a one-yard TD plunge in the third quarter.
Nick Stirone rushed for 84 yards to lead the Cyclones with Rifanburg adding 59 to pace the Cyclones offense.
Johnathan Heggie and Alex Wehrli led the stiff Cyclones defense. Hubbard, Burlison with a fumble recovery, and Rifanburg with an interception – along with Jacob Franklin, Stirone and the entire defensive squad – held Oneida to four first downs.
The Cyclones “C” team will appear in its fourth straight league championship game following a 26-6 win over Cazenovia, at Cazenovia, on Sunday. The Cyclones will play Utica for the league title.
Jacob Davis opened the scoring in the first on a two-yard TD with a Carson Maynard pass to JT Vinal good for the point-after. Elijah Rodriguez scored a three-yard TD and added a two-point PAT kick in the second for the 15-0 halftime lead.
Rodriguez added a two-yard TD run in in the third with Maynard running in the extra point, and Collin Montgomery added a 23-yard scamper for the final Cyclones score.
Dante Geislinger and Vinal had interceptions, with David Berger, Davis, Noah Bufalini, Rodriguez and Benson McGillicuddy playing “Big D.”
The Cyclones “B” team rallied for two touchdowns in the final 7 1/2 minutes to down North Utica 20-12 in an exciting contest Sunday in North Utica. The B team advances to the league finals this weekend against Cazenovia.
Down 12-6 following a North Utica score early in the fourth, the Cyclones tied the game at 12-12 on Carter Rudnitski’s 12-yard scoring run. On North Utica’s next possession, it ran a fake punt on fourth down and was tackled inside the five-yard line. Rudnitski scored the go-ahead TD and Cameron Ivan kicked the two-point conversion to seal the win.
Austin Foulds had a key fumble recovery, with Zack Mills, Payton Stirone, Cristobal Caballero, and Jacob Lamb leading the Cyclones defense.
The Cyclone “D” team had the best of North Utica to finish the season unblemished.
The Cyclones A, B, and C teams play for the league titles on Saturday with all three contests at Waterville High School. The schedule features the C team against Utica at 3:30 p.m., the B team against Cazenovia at 5:30 p.m. and the A team versus Camden at 7:30 p.m. Admission will be charged at the gate.
