Schools of the Past: McDonough, Merrian District #9
Once again with the district schools of the county, a lack of historical information is a cause of frustration and such is the case with the above district.
To all who are familiar with the township of McDonough, this schoolhouse is located at the intersection of the Creek Road and the Loomis Road on the east side of the corners. The photo that accompanies this article shows the schoolhouse before it was converted to a residence. This writer is not aware if this building is still standing.
Again we have to give credit to Mrs. Jennie Preston for her research and at the time she conducted this project (1970s) even then history was scant to say the least. However we will recap what she did uncover.
“The Merriam School District is the formerly popular name for District No. 9. Mr. Albert Merrian (His Last Farewell article) for whom the district was named after was one of the most well-known teachers in McDonough, and he wasn’t limited to teaching in this particular district either. He taught in several McDonough school districts where he was needed.
“The schoolhouse has been remodeled for family living. Presently under the ownership of Mr. Ron Morley (1970’s) it is under repair as all houses require. For many years the Driesbaugh family occupied the house. “The building has been moved about one-fifth of a mile west since its days of housing school children.”
