S-E advances in Section III soccer playoffs

BOYS’ SOCCER

Sherburne-Earlville 2, Adirondack 1
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville’s season took a step forward Wednesday as the Marauders won their Section III Class C playoff opener against Adirondack.
S-E scored both of its goals in the opening half. Dan Galvez received a miscleared ball from Adirondack, and tucked away his shot 17 minutes into the game. Sixteen minutes later, S-E was awarded an indirect kick inside the Adirondack 18-yard box, and Nathan Piazza scored his first goal of the season tallying off a Carter Cole pass.
Adirondack closed the gap 10 minutes into the second half, and after an injury sidelined S-E starting midfielder Elijah Morris the rest of the way, Adirondack created some dicey moments for the Marauders faithful. “We kind of went into a defensive shell the latter part of the second half, and our defense held pretty well,” said Sherburne-Earlville coach Mike Rodriguez. “Up until Elijah’s injury, I thought we had control of the game. We were able to string together a lot of nice passes and maintain possession.”
The Marauders will play at second-seeded Cazenovia Friday.

Trumansburg 2, Unadilla Valley 1 (OT)
TRUMANSBURG – In the first round of the Section IV Class C Tournament Tuesday, Trumansburg’s Abrahem Kittle sent his club into the second round of the playoffs scoring in overtime to eliminate the Storm.
Kittle scored both of the Blue Raiders’ goals, the game winner coming 11 minutes into the extra period after a misclear by the UV defense. Kittle was marked in the game early on by UV’s Dylan Thomsen. Thomsen suffered an early-game injury, and the UV defense rotated players on Kittle the rest of the game. “I felt we did a pretty good job on Kittle most of the game, he was just able to get a couple by us,” said UV coach Ryan Houck.
Kittle scored eight minutes into the game with a left-footed blast into the far upper 90 from just inside the 18-yard box. “(The shot) was just out of Kyle’s reach, (King, UV goalie), and I’m pretty sure there is no keeper in the league stopping that shot,” said UV coach Ryan Houck. “Kyle played an extraordinary game, especially with the foul weather conditions. He made a ton of huge saves for us.”
Kittle’s early goal stood until late in the contest when UV tied the game with three minutes remaining. Jared Hanslmaier initiated the Storm’s goal with a free kick from midfield. Colin Izard headed the direct kick to David Schwab, who buried his shot.
Summary
(1-0 T’Burg at half, 1-1 end of regulation)

Shots-corners: (T) 23-5, (UV) 5-2.
