Maine-Endwell tramples Purple Tornado, 55-7
ENDWELL – Norwich senior defensive back Danny Carson stood on the sidelines early in the fourth quarter, his team down 49-0 to Maine-Endwell at that point. “They’re good everywhere,” Carson said in assessing the opposition. When Carson returned to the field to play defense, he turned back toward his sideline to say one more thing: “And they’re fast, too.”
Perhaps Carson was understated in his praise of the Spartans, who were not only quick afoot, but equally quick in putting points on the board in routing the Purple Tornado, 55-7 here Saturday afternoon.
It was the 21st straight victory for a Spartans team that will play for the Class B title next weekend against Chenango Valley. Seeing M-E for the second time in four weeks – and his club losing by a combined 104-14 – NHS coach John Martinson expects big things from the blue, white, and gold Spartans over the next four weeks. “I said to our kids after the game that they can hold their heads high,” Martinson said. “You look across the field, and you won’t see another team like that around here for 20 years. They are a very special group.”
Norwich installed a defensive package designed to slow down the Maine-Endwell’s running game. It worked – for one possession. Norwich held on fourth down in its own defensive end, and took over at the 37. On the first play from scrimmage, NHS quarterback Mike Sutton had the ball jarred loose on a keeper, and M-E recovered the loose ball.
From there, the Spartans marched for the first of their eight touchdowns. Quarterback Kyle Gallagher hit fullback Nick Sorrenti on an seven-yard scoring toss. “We worked on the three-five (defense), and we knew we had to be aggressive and get some early breaks,” Martinson said. “Unfortunately, after our defense held we fumbled. They got the ball back, and sooner or later they scored.”
Maine-Endwell was most successful on toss sweeps to running backs Justin Jacoby and Darnell Woolfolk. Jacoby had two TD runs running for 180 yards on just nine carries. Jacoby added a TD reception from Gallagher, and Woolfolk rushed for 76 yards on seven totes. He, too, also hauled in a TD pass, one that went for 20 yards to make it 35-0 at halftime.
“We wanted to take away the run, and we did a good job with that early,” Martinson said. “They just outman you on the toss sweep. If you put another guy outside, they hit you with the fullback inside, and hurt you there. They are very difficult to defend scheme-wise.
Gallagher had two TD runs to go with his two TD passes. He rushed in from five yards out late in the first quarter. On his 15-foot path to the endzone, Gallagher broke one tackle at the line of scrimmage, broke another at the three, and leaned his 6-foot-5 frame over the plane of the goal line to cover the rest of the real estate. Gallagher weaved through the Norwich defense for a 30-yard TD run, the first points of the second half, and reserve Colin LaSalle added scoring runs of 30 and seven yards.
Norwich’s offense, held under 100 total yards through the first three quarters, drove 83 yards for its only touchdown. Backup quarterback Tristan Rifanburg called his number on an 11-yard scoring run late in the fourth. Rifanburg’s 92 rushing yards highlighted the Tornado, who finished the season on a four-game losing streak.
“We thought we put together a good game plan, and we gave it our all on the football field,” Martinson said, who sized up Maine-Endwell’s future succinctly. “The only thing that will hurt them is injuries or shooting themselves in the foot,” the NHS coach said. “I just don’t see that happening. They are too well coached.”
