Homann dazzles in UV football finale

Unadilla Valley 54, Deposit-Hancock 14
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley was given a win over Deposit-Hancock by forfeit in week one. To finish the season, the Storm defeated a fully equipped Eagles squad Friday night for their fourth win of the season.
Kody Homann had a career night in his final game as a UV player. Homann had six touchdowns – two rushing, three receiving, and one by interception – and threw another touchdown pass on a halfback option to quarterback Kurt Haycook.
Haycook had TD passes to Homann and Justin Hofer, and Hofer added a pair of halfback option TD tosses, both to Homann. It was a banner finish for the Storm’s “three H’s” as well as the rest of the UV corps. “We decided we wanted to go out and have fun our last game, and we tried all of our unique little plays,” said UV coach Daryl Decker. “We scored early in the game, and just took off from there.”
The Storm had 344 yards of total offense, and the defense allowed negative 17 rushing yards and just a pair of big-play touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Leading the offensive line were Alex Avolio and Richie Conklin, who came to Decker before the game. “They told me, ‘coach we’ll open holes for you today,’ Decker said. “We ran behind Alex and Richie on the left side all game.”
Less than 8 1/2 minutes into the game, UV established a 22-0 lead. Homann caught a 27-yard TD pass from Haycook, Homann hooked up with Haycook on a throwback pass for the second score, and Homann’s 23-yard pick six hiked the advantage. “We pretty much did what we wanted in this game,” Decker said. “I think that we made a statement that we will be competitive in Class D.”

Oxford 28, Whitney Point 12
OXFORD – Oxford accomplished the only two goals it set for Friday’s season finale.
The Blackhawks finished the season with back-to-back victories, and running back Paul Wonka eclipsed Chenango County’s all-time rushing mark running for 196 yards and two touchdowns.
Wonka surpassed the 3,654 yards gained by Unadilla Valley back Josh Foulds in the late 1990s finishing his career with 3,726 yards. “Paul has worked his tail off, and I wish he didn’t have the injury before the Unatego game,” said Oxford coach Ray Dayton. “To come back from a pretty bad ankle sprain and break the record, that says an awful lot about him.”
Colton Langille put the Blackhawks on the board with his third “pick six” of the season. Langille ran an interception back 52 yards, and it was his second interception return for a score in as many weeks. Wonka raced 46 yards for the first of his two TD runs on the day, and quarterback Jody Smith hooked up with senior Andrew Golden on a 13-yard TD reception.
Wonka’s eight-yard TD run in the fourth upped the lead to 28-6. “We had a pretty good second quarter, and after that we grinded the clock with Paul,” Dayton said. “We played pretty well on offense, and Colton’s interception gave us a lot of momentum.”
Golden finished with six receptions for 70 yards to lock up his third straight Chenango County receiving title. He finished with 37 catches and six touchdowns.

Windsor 19, Greene 18 (OT)
GREENE – Windsor rallied from an early 12-point hole beating Greene in overtime Friday night.
In the overtime period, the Black Knights converted a fourth-and-four from the 14, and also completed a six-yard pass on third-and-five to the Greene one. Darick Bartlow ran in the go-ahead touchdown, and Josh Cady connected on the extra point.
Greene easily scored on its overtime possession needing just four plays. Dan Treadwell ran for 15 yards, and Mike Beckwith’s one-yard plunge drew his club to 19-18. On the two-point conversion run, Beckwith was ruled short of the goal, although Greene head coach Tim Paske thought his back reached the end zone. “The officials didn’t make a call right way,” Paske said of the decisive two-point conversion. “Mike carried some people on his back, and it looked like he made it.”
Less than three minutes into the second period, the Trojans built a 12-0 lead. Beckwith’s first one-yard TD run coupled with a Treadwell 18-yard gallop had the hosts up a dozen.
Windsor closed the gap by halftime following a Greene turnover midway through the second quarter. Isma’il Griffin’s 13-yard run had Windsor within six at the break.
Late in the fourth quarter, Windsor mounted a long drive to tie the game. Cady completed a 16-yard pass to Mike Niggli on third-and-10, and Cady also hooked up with Ben Rivera on a 25-yard reception to extend the possession. Griffin’s tying touchdown run covered 20 yards, and that one came on a second-and-long.
“This is a tough one to swallow, but we handled some adversity (with injuries) during the game,” Paske said. “We had our third string quarterback in the game for a while, and that changes the mindset of what you want to do. But Windsor played well and stuck to its game plan. We stuffed a lot of their plans, but they were able to break a few little ones.”
Treadwell ran for 100 yards to lead Greene (6-3), who finished with an eighth straight winning season under Paske. “A lot of tough things happened on and off the field this year, and I was proud of the character this team displayed,” Paske said.
