Walton running game grinds down B-G

FOOTBALL

Walton 42, Bainbridge-Guilford 29
BAINBRIDGE – Walton’s loss last weekend to Tioga in the playoffs ended a 31-year streak of non-losing seasons. That said, one streak did not end: The Warriors’ 3 ½-decade run of dominance over the Bobcats.
Walton rushed the ball an incredible 69 times Friday night, 33 of those going to senior fullback Mike Beers. Beers had 180 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-29 victory to close the 2012 season.
Walton finishes with a 4-5 record, but has not lost to B-G in the 35-plus-year coaching stint of head coach Jim Hoover. “They just played Walton football and ground it out tonight,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “They chewed up clock, and we had a hard time getting stops. They didn’t punt the ball at all.”
B-G scored two quick touchdowns early in the second quarter to take its only lead of the game. Just 53 seconds into the second quarter, Corbin Palmer hit Tyler Ouimet on a 56-yard TD pass. Walton mishandled the ensuing kickoff giving B-G the ball back at the Walton 17.
Three plays and 58 seconds after its first score, B-G took the lead on Jake Mazzarella’s eight-yard jaunt. For the next two quarters, though, it was all Walton, who mustered one time-consuming drive after another.
Beers had TD runs of two and three yards later in the second quarter giving his club a 22-13 halftime lead. Beers scored two of his team’s three second-half touchdowns as the advantage grew to three touchdowns at one point.
Mazzarella tucked the ball away for two TD runs in the fourth quarter. He finished with 103 yards rushing in the game, and surpassed his team’s single-season rushing record on the final drive of the game. Mazzarella passed Dakota Vandermark’s 2010 rushing total of 1,339 yards to finish his season with 1,365 yards.
“Jake was more of a man possessed this year than in years past,” Mattingly said. “He really came in and wanted it. He was a bit of a surprise to us, and we didn’t expect to get that much out of him. He is physical and fast, and those are great qualities to have.”
The Bobcats (5-4) finish with their seventh straight winning season under Mattingly and third playoff appearance in four seasons. “To have a conditional game after losing in the playoffs is a bit of a letdown, but I’m proud of these kids,” Mattingly said. “They had a great season, and I’m happy for the seniors.”
