Unbeaten Trojans cruise into Class C finals

FIELD HOCKEY

Greene 5, Whitney Point 1
GREENE – More is definitely better as far as Greene coach Sue Carlin is concerned.
In winning six straight Section IV titles from 2006-2011, the Trojans needed to win just one game. Now in the Class C ranks, the Trojans are coming off their second sectional playoff win in less than week, and look for a lucky seventh sectional championshp this weekend after beating Whitney Point Wednesday.
It was the fourth win for Greene over the Golden Eagles this season to improve its record to 15-0. Carlin said her team is in much more of a playoff groove in preparation for another championship run. “It’s been great this year,” Carlin said. “When we were in As, we would have to wait two or three weeks before we played. There’s nothing like the real thing (instead of scrimmages) where we know that at any time, we go home and don’t play on. Whitney Point is a great team, and we had to fight hard.”
Whitney Point is an above average club with six losses this season, two-thirds of which came to the Trojans. Still, Greene made the difficult look easy scoring its first three goals in a four-minute span. Sophomore Tiffany Borst began her hat trick scoring off an Emily Conroe pass at 23:39. Two minutes and 16 minutes later, the advantage reached two goals.
Emma Anderson brought the ball down from the midfield, and crossed a pass to her right to Katherine Klecha at the top of the circle. Klecha finessed a pass to Jahna Driscoll in the middle, who was tight to the Point keeper. Driscoll reverse-sticked her shot into the cage in a dandy of a play. At 19:01, Borst tucked away a rebound following a Driscoll shot.
“It seems to be that way,” Carlin said of her team’s ability to score in bunches. “It’s definitely good for the heart.”
The Borst-Driscoll combination worked again early in the second half, and speedy Emily Gascon tallied at 25:26 for the five-goal advantage. The Trojans will meet the winner of Marathon and Sidney on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the Trojans’ home field. If Wednesday’s level of play is any indication of the future, Saturday’s opponent should be wary. “We just came into today’s game really confident, and I knew our seniors would lead us,” Carlin said.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Greene 4, Seton Catholic Central 1
GREENE – Greene head coach Rick Tallman thought his young team would make strides this year and challenge for a section title in another year. For Tallman and his troops, the future is now.
The Trojans (16-2) scored three goals over a 10 1/2-minute span, and easily dispatched Seton Catholic Central Wednesday evening in the Section IV Class C semifinals. The win sets up the school’s second sectional final in four years against unbeaten Lansing on Saturday.
“They definitely exceeded expectations this year,” Tallman said of his team. “I knew what I had in Alex (Leone), Kurt (Bartholomew) and Cam (Race). From that point, it was kind of up in the air. The boys have really put it together this year, and they’re still going.”
Greene’s toughest task early on was solving the Saints’ defense and its all-star goalie Connor Ligeikis. Ligeikis made multiple diving saves during the game, but had no answer for the Trojans’ opening goal with 2:55 left in the first half.
The scoring play was initiated by Greene goalie Connor Moriarity, who drop-kicked the ball to the Saints’ 40. Once there, the ball was pushed up and Luke Day made a diagonal pass to the left of the 18-yard box. A hard-charging Leone ran onto the pass in stride, and drilled a low, left-footed shot into the far right netting.
That goal fueled early second-half offense for Greene. Neil Barker netted the next goal following a Seton misclear at 34:17, and Leone put away a breakaway less than two minutes later raising the lead to three goals. “We made some nice adjustments to work through their defense,” Tallman said. “The biggest thing is that we started creating more opportunities (to score) and put more pressure on their keeper.”
Chris DaCosta capped Greene’s scoring 10 minutes after Leone’s second goal to give his club an insurmountable four-goal lead, one that was not expected by Tallman. “It was nice, and the lead gave us an opportunity to play some other kids,” the Greene coach said. “We came out and laid our hearts on the line, and played really well.”
The Trojans meet Lansing at Oneonta’s Hall of Fame fields. Game time was not known at press time.
