6OTS presents award-winning David Mallett Saturday

OXFORD – Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m., 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present nationally acclaimed folk singer-songwriter, David Mallett. With songs that have been recorded by more than 150 artists, David’s been described as a poet and troubadour, and “the best American Folk singer alive.” His most famous tune, “Garden Song,” [Inch by Inch] is an American folk classic. Mallett’s career has spanned four decades and fourteen albums …so far.
David Mallett has written material for an eclectic list of artists that includes Pete Seeger, Alison Kraus, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, John Denver, and even the Muppets. His songs are filled with passion, evocative imagery, and a sense of the inevitable passage of time. The struggle of the common man and the loss of small towns and landscapes is the subject of many of his songs and will seem quite familiar to our area. David’s music speaks to the essential things that move us all.
David Mallett hails from a small town in northern Maine. He started his professional career at the tender age of eleven, playing in a country and folk duo with his five-year-older brother, Neil. The Mallett Brothers hosted a weekly TV show out of Bangor, Maine in the late 60’s and released three regional 45 records. David started writing his own music and then, in 1975 he met Noel “Paul” Stookey, of Peter, Paul and Mary fame! Stookey opened a recording studio in Maine and became a true mentor to Mallett. In addition to producing David’s first three albums, Stookey helped to bring his songs to a national audience.
Moving to Nashville in the early-1990’s, Mallett continued to record and write new songs. “I did a little bit of everything,” he said, “wrote a lot of tunes, made some good records, got to know a lot of singers and played with some wonderful musicians. David returned to his home state of Maine a few years later where he calls his home today, but he’s been consistently touring nationally for thirty years. He also has appeared on numerous broadcasts, including NPR’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” The readers of Folkwax voted him 2003 Artist of the Year and “Artist in Me” 2003 Album of the Year. His latest album Alright Now, is considered Mallett’s most forward thinking collection to date.
“Mallett is a first-rate folk singer and writer. His portraits and townscapes are camera sharp, and his knowledge of his subjects is profound.” — Billboard
