NHS student hospitalized with serious injuries after assault
NORWICH – A Norwich High School student was transported via ambulance to UHS Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City Thursday following an assault that occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. in a high school hallway.
The Norwich City Police Department responded to the incident, and while the students’ names have not been released, one source – who wished to remain anonymous – said there had been previous incidents involving violence between the two students involved in the altercation, including a fight that took place as recently as two weeks ago, confirmed by school officials.
Rumors that the high school had been locked down while emergency personnel tended to the injured student could not be confirmed, and no details concerning the student’s injuries have been released, although they are believed to be severe. It is also possible that the student suffered a seizure following the attack, according to the aforementioned anonymous source.
Once reached for comment, Norwich City School District Superintendent Gerard O’Sullivan said he had just returned to his office from the high school following a morning assembly addressing the incident, which included the entire student body, the first time he’s ever held such a gathering. The superintendent added that he was on his way to Wilson Medical Center to meet with the student and his parents.
“I told [students] that after I talked to them, I would be driving to the hospital to talk to a mother and father about why their child is not in school with his classmates,” stated O’Sullivan. “I told them they are [students] intelligent, talented and creative, but they have to choose how they want to be remembered and how they want to lead their lives. We want to treat everyone with respect and dignity and we want everyone to learn in a safe environment. It’s my duty and responsibility to create and maintain that safe environment and to assure students that they will learn in a safe environment. This is a horrible event, but it can also be used as a catalyst in making a significant change in how we work and treat each other.”
The incident remains under investigation and charges may be pending. It’s believed the case has been turned over to Chenango Family Court as it involves a juvenile suspect.
