Cyclones’ C team advances to Empire Classic finals

CAMDEN – The Norwich Cyclones C team improved to 11-0, and advanced to the Empire State Classic Pop Warner football finals blanking the Southside Cyclones of Rochester, 13-0, on Sunday.
Rochester enjoyed continual field position in the first half. The always-stiff Cyclones defense held the swift Rochester unit out until of the endzone repeatedly in the first half with the game remaining a scoreless tie.
The Cyclones began the second half with Noah Bufalini recovering the onside kick at the Rochester 48. The Cyclones mounted a hard-nosed, straight-ahead four-minute drive culminating in a five-yard JT Vinal touchdown run. Carson Maynard passed to Elijah Rodriguez for the point after touchdown.
The Cyclones offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage throughout the second half allowing Jacob Davis to rush for 103 yards, with Rodriguez gaining big yardage also.
Rochester returned the following kickoff 60 yards, inside the Norwich 30, with Maynard making a TD-saving tackle.
The Cyclone “D” held again and again, and mounted a 70-yard, eight-minute ball-control drive with Davis reaching paydirt in the fourth quarter, on a six-yard TD run.
Benson McGillicuddy, with a key diving interception, Bufalini, Davis, Kyle Shepard, Rodriguez and David Berger led the swarming Cyclones defense.
The Cyclones C team members this year (in numerical order) are Carson Maynard, Michael Squires, Kai Scheer, John Vinal III, Noah Bufalini, Cameron Byrne, Elijah Rodriguez, Jacob Davis, Collin Montgomery, Brayden Supensky, Houston Edwards, Benson McGillicuddy, Dante Geislinger, Colby Cannestra, Seth Wessels, Chris Behrmann, Nick Loscavio, Shane Lawrence, Izaiah Caballero, Kyle Shepard, Jared Houck, David Berger, Ayden John-Lorimer, Neil Brissette, Tyler Rice, Nathan Parry, Elijah Langille, Austin Hatton, James Jones, Kody Harrison, Cameron Marvin, Tucker Mucha, Jonathan Matlack-Grey, and Brandon Smith.
A large Norwich crowd, as well as the Cyclone cheerleaders, were on hand to support the team this past weekend. The Cyclones will play the New City Rams of Rockland County on Saturday, Nov. 24 (tentatively at 11 a.m.) in Sauquoit for the Empire Classic title.
