Clyde Cole Tournament to mark 50th year

OXFORD – The second-longest-running high school wrestling tournament in New York State will mark its golden anniversary Nov. 30-Dec. 1.
The Clyde Cole Wrestling Tournament, co-sponsored by the Oxford Rotary Club and Oxford Academy, reaches 50 years in less than two weeks.
The two-day tournament, long on memories, is inviting all former champions, referees, and tournament volunteers to a social gathering the eve of the tourney, Thursday, Nov. 29 from 6-8 p.m. at the Oxford American Legion on South Washington Ave.
“We have lot of photos and a slide show we will run from past years of the tournament,” said Terry Stark, representing the Oxford Rotary. “We also intend to run the slide show on a loop during the tournament. It’s a social gathering and a celebration for people to share their stories of the tournament.”
Organizers are still in the process of putting together the slide show, and invite all community members to submit photos to Stark or longtime official Carl Koenig. “They can either email the photos to me or Terry, or we can arrange to drop off the photos,” Koenig said. “It only takes 10 seconds to scan a photo.”
Several local teams plan to attend the tournament along with other schools from around the state. Expected to compete are Oxford, Norwich, Sherburne-Earlville, Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton, Unatego, Sidney, Harpursville, Cooperstown, Carthage, Averill Park, and longtime Section II power Queensbury.
Over 7,000 wrestlers have competed in the tournament including dozens of Section IV champions, nearly 50 New York State champions, and three NCAA Division One champions – J.P. O’Connor, Oxford; Kyle Dake, Lansing; and Brad Penrith, Windsor.
“The first thing that comes to mind is the caliber of wrestling at this tournament,” Koenig said, a former Oxford wrestling coach and Section IV wrestling official for four decades. “The whole concept, in the beginning, was to bring together the best wrestlers in Chenango County. We then branched out and invited teams from around the state, and it’s only made the tournament better and better. There is such a wealth of wrestling talent here in Chenango County. Sometimes you have to step back and look at it, but really, it’s something we can be proud of.”
Stark, who is helping organize the social event, said that the Rotary will provide appetizers and non-alcoholic beverages. He added that all former Oxford wrestlers are also invited to the gathering.
Anyone with wrestling photos of past Clyde Cole tournaments may reach Stark by phone at 843-9414 or email at tstark@stny.rr.com. Koenig may be reached by phone at 244-8432 or email at koenigc@dcmoboces.com.
