Cornell Extension to host ag plastic recycling demonstration

OXFORD – Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chenango County and the Cornell Recycling Ag Plastic Project will host an ag plastic baling demonstration at Carl Cummings’ farm at 4691 East River Road Oxford at 11 a.m. on Friday. The demonstration will show how bale wrap and other ag plastics can be baled for recycling, saving the farmer the expense for disposal and saving landfill space. All interested parties can attend for free. For directions or more information contact Rich Taber at 334 5841 ex.21.
Agricultural Plastics are increasingly used by farmers to store feed, control weeds, and make greenhouses. The plastics improve feed quality and crop production, but create disposal problems for farmers who must pay to have the plastic hauled away. Used agricultural plastic also takes up a lot of space in landfills. However, new recycling methods that can turn ag plastic into products such as sidewalks, wall board, or convert the plastic into oil are creating a demand for recycled ag plastics. The purpose of Friday’s demonstration is to show farmers the proper way to store plastics for baling and demonstrate how the baling process works.
