Trojans Triumph!
CICERO – Greene’s players left the Cicero-North Syracuse field with tears for the third straight season. Only these streaming rivulets were conceived of joy.
The Trojans’ field hockey team matched its most lopsided win of a 19-0 unbeaten season in the most unliekly of settings – the Class C state championship game – blowing out Section XI’s Southhampton, 7-0 Sunday morning. It was the program’s seventh state championship and second in four seasons. The victory also erases the memory of back-to-back state playoff losses on this same field in 2010 and 2011.
“It feels like I’ve accomplished everything I’ve ever worked for,” said Greene senior Emma Anderson, who had three goals and one assist in the title clash. “We’ve all been together since the first grade playing sports. Everything we’ve done has prepared us for this moment.”
Anderson was one of four seniors who played on the 2009 state title team, and it’s no surprise that those four – Anderson, Jahna Driscoll, Emily Conroe, and Colleen Dietrich – accounted for four goals and five assists in their final game in a Trojans field hockey uniform.
Conroe had one goal and two assists, while senior Jahna Driscoll, the school’s leading scorer this season, had three assists. Speedy right wing Emily Gascon scored twice, and reserve left wing Paige Castle added a tally.
“They’re all such great kids, they just wanted it,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin, her voice breaking with emotion. “That’s why I’m so happy. We had like 10 coaches on the field at all times.”
Southhampton (11-9) did not have the gaudiest of records entering the game, but found itself in the state championship game after knocking off unbeaten Barker in the semifinals Saturday. An underdog on paper, Southhampton played the role of aggressor early on testing the Trojans’ defense with a pair of close-range shots in the first three minutes. Greene keeper Julia Amell made a strong kick save of a point-blank shot in what was the Mariners’ best scoring opportunity of the game.
After clearing the ball out, the Trojans moved the ball down the field to create its first penalty corner three minutes in. Anderson took a shot that was saved by Southhampton goalie Alex Ambrose, but Gascon was on the spot to put away the rebound at the 26:45 mark.
Greene generated two more penalty corners that went for naught over the next 15 minutes, but those near-misses were just precursors for an offensive blitzkrieg that put the game out of reach.
Driscoll drove a hard shot from the middle of the penalty circle that was tipped in by Castle at 10:45. From there, the Trojans’ offense could do little wrong as Anderson ended the half with three straight goals, two of which were tip-ins following penalty corners.
“I think that first couple minutes, we had some nerves,” Carlin said. “After that, we were just composed.”
Carlin, herself, admitted to some nerves before the game, but was confident her team would allay any tension. “With all of our veteran players, I didn’t have to worry as much,” Carlin said. “You never think it’s going to be 7-0, but I was hoping...it was just a clinic out there, and they played so well.”
The state championship win was Carlin’s 399th coaching win. Number 398 was also on par Greene’s other 18 triumphs this season as Conroe scored five minutes into the game in a 4-0 shutout of Greenwich Saturday. Driscoll and Anderson also tallied, while reserve Jess David notched her first goal of the season off a corner pass from Conroe.
In completing a perfect season, Greene outscored the opposition by a whopping 91-3, and that includes a 31-1 margin in six postseason wins. “It’s hard to compare one team to the next because the previous (state champions) were in Class A and Class B,” Carlin said, whose team moved back to Class C competition this year. “I just wanted to give these girls a chance against schools their own size. They deserved it.”
