Emkey plans gas pipeline
NORWICH – A Pennsylvania-based company that purchased right-of-way assets from Norse Energy, Inc. earlier this year is planning to build a 75-mile pipeline in New York from the town of Eaton in Madison County through Chenango County and onto Windsor in Broome County.
Officials of Emkey Gathering, LLC outlined the route and provided details to members of the county’s natural gas advisory committee in Norwich in late October, and to officials in Madison County this month. The route would expand upon a sequence of existing natural gas pipeline easements originally pulled together by Norse and tie together the Tennessee Pipeline that transverses the northern part of the state to the Millennium in the south.
Chenango County Natural Gas Consultant Steven Palmatier could not be reached for comment, nor Emkey’s Stephen Keyes, who is spearheading the project for his company. However, reports are that the pipeline would be 16 to 24 inches in diameter, and used to send natural gas from already producing sandstone wells and future shale gas wells, should drilling in the Marcellus and Utica be permitted in New York. Digging on the project hasn’t started yet, but some landowners have reportedly been notified of Emkey’s plans.
The Emkey line would travel from Eaton and Lebanon in Madison County to Smyrna and on through Plymouth, Preston, Oxford, Coventry, and Afton in Chenango County before crossing into and Colesville and Windsor in Broome County.
Norse, which drilled more than 30 wells in Chenango County, slowed operations with multiple delays in the state’s environmental regulatory process. However, the company previously built an 8-mile, 16-inch gathering pipeline that connects producing sandstone wells in Smyrna and Preston and transmits natural gas through existing NYSEG lines.
